***UPDATES 7 pm ISRAEL TIME***

The situation along the Gaza border continues to degrade with Israeli troops coming under fire in the last hour. Iron Dome batteries have been placed again in Ashdod and in Nes Ziona/Rehovot.

At 11:32 am this morning, two Palestinians  were captured as they breached the Gaza border fence in the western Negev.

At 2:51 am this morning, the IAF attacked targets in Gaza in response to the rocket fire. The targets were all in northern Gaza and included 2 empty buildings. Palestinian media claim that a third building was hit and that a family living there suffered casualties.

At 1o:34 pm last night, at least 4 missiles were fired by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza. Sirens blared in Zones 220, 221, and 252 along the Gaza border, sending tens of thousands of Israeli men, women, and children into bomb shelters. Three of the missiles exploded near Sderot. No Israelis suffered physical wounds–but there is no word yet of trauma.

At 10:23 pm last night, two IDF soldiers were shot and wounded at checkpoint near Givat Ze’ev on Road 443. One soldier was seriously wounded; the other moderately. The terrorist escaped.

–>There are reports that the situation in northeastern Lebanon is becoming increasingly unstable.

xxlebanonSyrian jets apparently attacked IS positions in Lebanon yesterday. The fact that IS now has outposts in Lebanon–and has fighters streaming in from the Syrian city of Homs–is a matter of huge concern to the Lebanese. In essence, IS has overrun Hezbollah positions on the Syrian side of the border.

–>Speaking of Hezbollah, we have another sign of just how thinly spread it has become.

The terrorist organization revealed that three of its fighters were killed in Yemen yesterday.

Dead Hezbollah men in Yemen.

Dead Hezbollah terrorists in Yemen.

There’s only one thing to say about this: the more dead Hezbollah fighters the better.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Back in 1881-1882 a group of  Yemenite Jews came to Jerusalem (click here for a previous blog on the subject). At the time, Jews in the city purchased land in Silwan on a hill facing the city for the Yemenites to live. In the 1930s, the community was forcibly evacuated in the 1930s by the British. The ostensible reason for the evacuation was for the community’s protection in the face of continuing Arab violence.

The ongoing struggle of Israel’s Yemeni community to recover its property in the Silwan area is a study in tenacity.

In recent years, 12 claims have been adjudicated in Israeli courts. In each case, in an almost shocking adherence to evidence (pardon the cynicism), the Israel Supreme Court has upheld Israeli claims.

To date, 51 Palestinian families in Silwan, totaling some 300 people, have been forced to move out of the apartments in which they have been squatting for decades.

Many of the claims based on Yemenite ownership of property are taken to court by the Ateret Cohanim Association. Currently, the Association has another 27 claims in court, and there is every reason to believe that they will carry the day in these cases.

The center of renewed Jewish life in Silwan is Beit Yehonatan which is home to ten Jewish families. The Association also owns 13 more apartments that were reclaimed last year, but they remain empty at present for security reasons.

Ateret Cohanim is not the only organization fighting to reclaim Jewish property. Elad, which is in charge of the Ir David complex has also purchased more than 20 apartments closer to the Old City.

Other organizations have now filed suit again five Arab families living in the Muslim Quarter.

To all of these organizations–and to all of the courageous Jews who now live in Silwan–israelstreet says: “Bravo!”
