Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours

Murdered in Jerusalem yestereday: Levana Malihi, a 60-year-old mother of 3 and grandmother of 6; and Yossi Kirma, a 29-year-old, recently married, Special Unit police officer.

Murdered in Jerusalem yesterday: Levana Malichi, a 60-year-old  beloved mother of 3 and grandmother of 6 who used to work at the Knesset; and Yossi Kirma, a 29-year-old, recently married, Special Unit police officer who stopped another terrorist attack in Jerusalem in December of last year. May their memories always be blessed.

Whenever a gruesome terrorist attack occurs like the one yesterday in Jerusalem in which two Israelis were murdered and six others wounded, there is no shortage of opinions in Israel as to the cause.

And most of those opinions are just plain nonsense.

If you can believe this, our Minister of Internal Security and member of the political “right”, Gilad Erdan, blamed the shootings yesterday on Facebook.

Other politicians on the “left” blamed the shootings on “the absence of a peace process leading to a two-state solution.”

But anybody who lives here in Israel can see what the problems are in an instant.

1. Israel does not exert its sovereignty over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem–the most important place in Judaism and the heart of our capital. When Palestinians see how weak Israel is on the Mount, it emboldens them to commit terror everywhere especially in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria.

2. The PLO, aka the Palestinian Authority, spends all of its time encouraging Palestinians to attack and murder Israelis and most of its money rewarding those who do. “Jews are trying to take over the Al-Aksa Mosque” is the clarion call of PLO incitement. And yet the Israeli government continues to pretend like the PLO is a potential partner for peace.

3. The leftist Israeli media does everything possible to support the PLO from grossly under-reporting what takes place everyday in Judea and Samaria to grossly over-reporting the slightest incident which casts Israel and its security forces in an unfavorable light.

4. Israel is increasingly hamstrung by political correctness both in the capture and imprisonment of terrorists.  The government and the IDF General Command are both afraid of their own shadows and will do anything to get a positive 2 minutes of coverage in the media. The judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, is dominated by those immersed in political correctness.

Let’s go back to what happened yesterday.

To begin with, what terror did you not read about:

Palestinian terrorists threw Molotov firebombs at a bus in Gush Etzion, at cars near the Horseshoe Intersection, at security forces in Abu Dis, and at the T-Junction outside of Gush Etzion (a woman was badly wounded).

Palestinian terrorists staged riots in Salah A-Din street in Jerusalem, the Silwan neighborhood of Jerusalem, Bani Na’im, Sebastia, and at A-Ram (an IDF soldier was wounded).

Palestinian terrorists assaulted Israeli with “rocks” at the Shuafat Checkpoint (3 police officers were wounded), at a bus near Hevron Hills (one passenger was wounded), near Ir David in Jerusalem, Neria, Tekoa, and at Beit El.

Not one of the above terror attacks was reported on by the Israeli mainstream media yesterday.

Not one.

More about yesterday. Levani Malichi and Yossi Kerma should never have been murdered because the terrorist should have been in prison. If you can believe this:

the terrorist assaulted a police officer on the Temple Mount in 2013; he was indicted for the crime, but later released before trial.

in January 2015, the terrorist was arrested for posting “provocative” comments about killing Israelis online. He was convicted and spent one year in prison, emerging in December of last year.

subsequently, he was rearrested for the crime he committed in 2013, found guilty at trial, and sentenced to 4 months in prison. The prison sentence was supposed to have started in June.

however, the terrorist petitioned the court of Jerusalem District Judge Hagit Mac-Kalmanovich, to delay his return to prison, and Mac-Kalmanovich unbelievably agreed to postpone it until yesterday–when the terrorist was supposed to turn himself in to authorities. Instead he grabbed an M-16 (who knows where he got it?), and drove down a street murdering Israelis.

In your humble servant’s opinion, it is simply unbelievable that the terrorist was given a postponement of beginning of his sentence. Here is a terrorist who assaulted a policeman on the Mount and urged the killings of Israelis on Facebook–and he was free to walk around?

What does this entire episode say about an Israeli judicial system that is so beset by political correctness that it dropped the charges in the original indictment and then did not imprison the terrorist immediately when he was found guilty?

More about yesterday. As soon as the murders occurred, business owners in eastern Jerusalem closed their doors in solidarity with the terrorist, and Hamas issued a statement that one of “its leaders” had been “martyred” in Jerusalem for the sake of the Al-Aksa Mosque.

It is a seemingly curious paradox that as Israel kowtows more and more to the Jordanian Islamic Wakf on the Mount and increasingly limits Jews from going to the Mount, the Palestinian public is ever more consumed by the idea that the Al-Aksa Mosque is under attack.

To put it a different way, the less sovereignty that Israel exerts on the Temple Mount, the more inflamed the Palestinian public is.

The more concessions we give the PLO and the Palestinians (such as allowing 1,000,000 Palestinians to “worship” at the Temple Mount during Ramadan), the more they want, and the more violent incitement and terror attacks become.
