The Outrageous Attacks On Israel’s “Nation-State Law”

Quote of the Day:

“The abolition of the status of the Palestinian refugees is justified, necessary and fair…It is unthinkable that the Palestinians are the only people in the world where one can be born in Paris or Qatar and inherit the status of a refugee. There are not 5 million Palestinian refugees. This is one of the biggest scams in history.”

Yair Lapid, Yesh Atid Party Chairman

This quotation speaks for itself and could not be more correct. The Palestinian refugee business is one of the biggest scams in modern history.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

**There were 10 more fires yesterday in the KKL (Keren Kayemet LeYisrael)-Jewish National Forest areas along the Gaza Border alone. The most destructive of the fires was in the area around Kibbutz Be’eri.

How many fires occurred elsewhere is unknown at this hour.

**Two more Palestinian terrorists were killed as they attempted to breach the Gaza Border Fence.

In case you missed it, Hamas dedicated the violence at the Fence yesterday to “Martyr of Jerusalem, Muhammed Yousef.” Yousef was the Palestinian terrorist who brutally stabbed Yotam Ovadia to death in Adam last week. Yousef was subsequently shot and killed by another person he stabbed.

The rally in Tel Aviv last night . . .

According to police estimates, around 75,000 people turned out for the New Israel Fund-sponsored demonstration against the government last night in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv.

As we noted yesterday in this blog, what started out as a Druze solidarity event, quickly morphed into yet another opportunity to bash the Netanyahu coalition government.

Every politician on the “left’ and every would-be politician on the “left” showed up to trash the Nation Law and PM Netanyahu. These included such stalwarts as international jet-setter Tzipi Livni, head of the Labor Party Avi Gabbay, and former IDF Chief of Staff and PM wannabe Gabi Ashkenazi.

In short, it was the same old crowd (with left-wing Druze added) that always appears in Rabin Square to babble against the government.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Outrageous Attacks On Israel’s “Nation-State Law”

Your humble servant is becoming increasingly incensed over the tsunami of criticism being leveled at the Nation-State Law from left-wing Israelis, the European Union, the United Nations, and self-proclaimed “progressive” American Jews.

What is it that is so objectionable about our proclaiming that our flag has a Star of David and that our national anthem is Hatikvah? And what is it that disturbs everyone that we declare that Hebrew is our national language?

But most of all, one has to ask oneself what is it about a law that proclaims that Israel is a Jewish state that all of the above find so reprehensible?

If you ask any of the above entities what is so objectionable, disturbing, and reprehensible, they will all shout in unison that Israel has rendered its minorities (read “Arabs”) second-class citizens. They will shout that there is no way we should expect these minorities to recognize a flag with a Jewish symbol on it, or sing an anthem which describes Jewish longing for a homeland, or recognize Hebrew as the only official language.

To which your humble servant responds: hogwash.

Do you really think that your average Israeli-Arab (the Druze and some Bedouin excluded) ever waved an Israeli flag or sang Hatikvah? Nevertheless, every person in Israel, Jew and non-Jew, is treated equally under the law. If you don’t believe this, go sit in any courtroom in Israel for fifteen minutes.

What is objectionable, disturbing, and reprehensible to the above groups is the very idea of a Jewish state–especially a Jewish state codified in law.

No criticism of the Nation Law has been more absurd than that voiced by one of Israel’s most vocal supporters, Alan Dershowitz. According to Dershowitz, the Law should never have been passed by the Knesset because it is “unnecessarily provocative” and “only gives ammunition to the opposition.”

Unnecessarily provocative to describe who we are? Give ammunition to the opposition by announcing we are a Jewish state?

Think about this for a moment.

What opposition could be offended by that announcement? Only the people who think that there should not be a Jewish state.

Dershowitz also intoned that the Law would widen the rift between Israel and Diaspora Jews (read “American Jews”). To which your humble servant replies “Of course it will and who cares?”

It will widen the rift already created by American Jews who increasingly cannot tolerate the idea of Israelis living in Israel deciding for themselves the character of our Jewish state. Unlike American Jews, we Israeli Jews do not want to assimilate ourselves out of existence.

In sum, the Nation-State Law is our Israeli expression of what our state of Israel is all about. As we noted yesterday, it is not perfect and should be amended. But to attack the Law as being “undemocratic” and “demeaning” and “discriminatory” and “racist” and, and, and . . . is outrageous.
