The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Numerous Israelis were wounded in Judea and Samaria by Palestinian terrorists assaulting them with “rocks” and Molotovs:

*a bus driver was cut severely when a rock shattered the front windshield of the bus he was driving near Hizma; he managed to drive the bus to a safe point–no passengers were wounded.

*a woman was wounded when her car was pounded with “rocks” near the Maccabim checkpoint; she is in “moderate” condition.

*a policeman was wounded near Issawiya when a “rock” hit him in the eye. He is currently hospitalized.

*a man was wounded when he was hit by a “rock” near Tekoa. He is currently hospitalized at Sha’are Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.

Aside from the above, there “rock” and Molotov attacks at Luban a-Sharqiya, Beit Rima, Hevron, Alfei Menashe, on the Gush Etzion Road, at the Postal Junction, and at a myriad of other places.

Palestinian violence continued unabated along the Gaza border with incendiary balloons flying over Sderot, crashing, and starting fires. Terrorists on the border continued to attempt to breach the border fence.

Speaking of Gaza . . .

The abominable UNRWA in Gaza announced this morning that it will organize a march to the border fence this Friday or next by its own workers’ union of 13,000 employees along with 150,000 other residents of Gaza.

The UNRWA organizer of the march ranted:  “We will go to the Erez crossing and enter the crossing, or we will die . . .”

Let’s hope it is the latter.

Speaking of UNRWA . . .

D0 you remember our israelstreet blog of just 3 days ago when we discussed how the IDF is now trembling in its boots about everything? This morning comes another warning from the IDF that U.S. reductions to the UNRWA budget will lead to more deadly Palestinian terrorism.

We have heard that the price of humous is going up tomorrow. Your humble servant wonders when the IDF General Command will issue a fearful warning about that.

And more about Gaza . . .

Fatah (the PLO) declared last night that it will not sit down with Hamas under the current conditions being imposed by Egypt.

Of course, this declaration will probably be changed by this afternoon.

Speaking of the PLO . . .

The above declaration came amidst Palestinian reports that Mahmoud Abbas is beginning to suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s–and cannot remember the names of those around him. In any case Abbas still plans to speak to the U.N. in September.

A Palestinian spokesman noted yesterday that high on the Palestinian agenda is helping the Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the U.S. midterm elections in November.

TODAY’S BLOG:

“This is a disease without a cure . . .”

U.S. Ambassador David Friedman was at his eloquent best in an interview he gave to Israeli media yesterday.

Here were some of the more interesting quotes:

“The chances of a stable [long-term ceasefire] settlement in Gaza are very low.”

“Until there is an internal Palestinian reconciliation that will bring the Palestinian Authority back into Gaza– the most you can aspire to is a short-term cease-fire.”

“From Israel’s point of view there is no reason to go to war in Gaza because the only way to change the result is ground entry, and this creates a huge risk to human life, and that makes no sense.”

“The problem for Israel and the United States is that if we bypass the Palestinian Authority and try to rehabilitate Gaza without them, we will give a huge reward to Hamas, which means that its violence is working . . .”

“There is still no timetable for its [the Trump Peace Plan] presentation. There were rumors that we would present something in the UN [next month]; it will not happen.”

“People thought that the president meant that Israel would have to pay a high price. That’s not what he said; he said a ‘higher price’. This is an important difference, especially in this part of the world. I was in the room when it was decided to move the embassy. The president does not expect a specific change, just to have some kind of interaction. There has never been and will never be a demand that Israel do anything in exchange for the transfer of the embassy.”

Your humble servant earnestly hopes that this last sentence is true.

But perhaps the most accurate quote of all was back again on the subject of Gaza when Friedman so accurately said:

“This is a disease without a cure . . .”

Indeed it is a disease without a cure–at least not one that would be politically palatable.
