WARNING!

There is a graphic photo of a dead terrorist on israelstreet today.

Quote of the Day:

“The time has come to apply Israeli sovereignty and law to Israeli communities in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. 51 years of communities, half a million Israeli citizens, now is the time. Hillel the Elder would say, “If I am not for me, who am I?

The time of the withdrawals has passed, the time of uprooting has passed . . . The decision before us is a historic one–as was Menachem Begin’s decision to impose sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 1981. It will happen. Let’s lead this, we the Likud!”

Gideon Sa’ar in a rousing speech last night to a gathering of the Likud Party in Or Yehuda. Sa’ar is generally thought to be the successor to Benjamin Netanyahu should Netanyahu ever step down as Prime Minister.

The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in Judea and Samaria . . .

Soldiers and police stand over the body of a dead terrorist in Kiryat Arba yesterday.

Brandishing a knife, the terrorist in the photo above rushed a group of soldiers in the Giv’at Ha’avot neighborhood of Kiryat Arba yesterday afternoon. He met his timely end.

Elsewhere, Israelis were attacked with Molotovs and “rocks” at Nili Square, Elon Moreh, Negohot, Har Gilo, the south Hevron Hills, Husan, Bethlehem, the Gilboa Crossing, the Alon Junction, Adam, and many other places as reported to Rescue Without Borders, hakolhayehudi, and rotter.

Palestinian terror on the Gaza border . . .

Palestinian terrorists in Gaza sent dozens more incendiary balloons and kites into southern Israel. Ever more land was torched. Here is a picture of a fire at Nir Am:

Another major fire was started at Sha’ar Hanegev.

Population statistics as Rosh Hashana approaches . . .

Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority released these statistics yesterday (note that the numbers are slightly different from those published by the Central Bureau of Statistics):

Number of persons born this past year: 168,441 (about 14,037 per month)

Number of new immigrants: 24,496 (62% of them from the former USSR, mainly from Russia and the Ukraine, 12% from France and 10% from the United States).

Number of persons who died: 41,165

Number of marriages: 61,181

Number of divorces: 24,868

By the way, the Palestinian Health Ministry issued a statement yesterday that during August, 5024 babies were born in Gaza, a rate of 162 births per day.

About those Israeli newborns . . .

The top 10 most common names for Israeli girls last year were, in order:  Tamar, Avigail, Miriam, Sara, Adele, Yael, Noa, Shira, Noya and Leah.

The top 10 most common names for boys were: Muhammad, Joseph, Ariel, Omer, Adam, David, Daniel, Lavi, Eitan and Uri.

Yes, Muhammad. With virtually half of all Israeli-Arab boys being named Muhammad or some variation thereof, Muhammad leads the boys’ names each year.

Bad news before the coming Rosh Hashana food orgy . . .

The Central Bureau of Statistics revealed yesterday that 48% of the Israeli population is overweight (55% men and 41% women).

Your humble servant is sure that the first item on the agenda following the ingestion of zillions of calories over the next couple of weeks will be a diet.

Well, maybe, because . . .

Public attitudes tell a different story . . .

The same CBS study shows that among Israelis aged 20 and over, a whopping 89% are very satisfied or satisfied with their lives.

In terms of health, 84% assess their state of health as “very good” or “good.”

The Iranian rial continues to plummet.

The black market rate of the rial against the dollar reached a new low yesterday of $1 = 128,000 rials.

And this despite the best efforts of France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China–all of which are trying desperately to save the Iranian economy with packages of economic aid.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Ehud Olmert: A Dangerously Deluded Loon

If you ever had any doubt about former PM Ehud Olmert’s sanity and his commitment to Israel, that lack of sanity and commitment was confirmed in an amazing interview that Olmert gave to the Iraeli-Arab channel yesterday.

Among other things:

*Olmert praised PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as “a great leader.”

A great leader who has turned down every Israeli offer of peace and continually incites terror against Israelis.

*Olmert praised PLO security forces: “The only terror that exists is in areas that Israel controls, not the Palestinian Authority.

Of course there is no terror in Area A of Judea and Samaria. Why would there be Palestinian terror attacks against Palestinians?

*Olmert praised himself for establishing the principle of Israeli withdrawals from Judea and Samaria: “The fact that Israel left territories where it controlled the lives of other people has brought tremendous prestige to the world, creating a system of expectations for political progress . . .”

Can you believe this crap (pardon my French)? Olmert is proud of creating international expectations that Israel will withdraw from land? This is political correctness gone berserk.

*Jerusalem . . . I suggested that the so-called Holy Basin, the entire part of Jerusalem that includes the holy sites of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, which in this part is not a part of Jerusalem, would be under the sovereignty of no state. I think Jordan . . . the Palestinians, Israel, and the United States, should have put together an international trust, under the supervision of the United Nations, to manage the Holy Basin.”

In all of this rant by Olmert, just think about Jerusalem for a moment. Olmert actively sought to relinquish all Israeli sovereignty over the Jewish Quarter, the Western Wall, and the Temple Mount and turn it over to a consortium supervised by the United Nations.  That Jordan and the Palestinians would be involved–after they ethnically cleansed the Old City of all Jews between 1948-1967 and blew up Jewish synagogues and holy places–is beyond the pale. That the virulently anti-Israel United Nations would have been in a supervisorial role is unbelievable.

*And despite all of this, Olmert confirms that Mahmoud Abbas never responded to his offer even though he describes their conversation as “historic”: “I never received an answer from Mahmoud Abbas on this proposal. . . In our conversation, a very moving conversation, and in my opinion, a historic conversation, I think a conversation like never before, I told him ‘Mr. President, this is a proposal that maybe no other Israeli leader will offer you for 50 years, sign it on the map!'”

Moving. Historic. A conversation like never before. Olmert is a legend in his own mind.  Obviously Abbas wasn’t so moved, and yet, Olmert calls Abbas “a great leader.”

Let us conclude today by calling Olmert what he was and is: a dangerously deluded loon.
