The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror on the Gaza border . . .

It was another Friday of Hamas terror attacks at the Gaza border security fence with grenades, bombs, IEDs, and Molotovs being hurled at our soldiers. During the night, Hamas fired three 107 mm mortars at Nahal Oz; fortunately, no soldiers or civilians were physically wounded. Afterward, an IDF helicopter attacked a Hamas outpost (read: “empty building”) at Dir Al-Balah in southern Gaza.

Palestinian terror in Judea and Samaria . . .

Anatot, Hevron, Hizma, Beitar Illit, Tekoa, Kiryat Arba, Beit Hagai, Elon Moreh, Itamar, Tapuach, Hawara, Karmei Tzur: these were but a few of the many places where Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis with Molotovs and “rocks.”

The snow and rain keep falling . . .

Actually “pouring” by Israeli standards. Mt. Hermon has had more than 20 cm (8 inches) of snow in the last 24 hours. Major rainfall elsewhere includes: Kibbutz Tzuba in the Judean Hills 69 mm (2.71 inches), Kibbutz Negba 66 mm, Karnei Shomron 64 mm, Ariel 53 mm, Merom Golan 51 mm, Jerusalem 49 mm, Itamar 47 mm, Tzfat 38 mm, and Ashdod 30 mm (1.18 inches).

Israel edges closer to energy independence . . .

The location of the Leviathan gas field.

The location of the Leviathan gas field.

Noble Energy has revealed that the lower part of the production platform for the new gas well at the Leviathan off-coast site 125 km west of Haifa is now en route to Israel. Built in Texas, it is 98 meters long and weighs almost 16 tons. It is actually being towed to Israel by a 180 meter long barge. It is expected to arrive by the end of January.

When commercial operation at the well site begins at the site in late 2019, the gas is expected to flow to the local Israel market and be sold to the Jordan Electric Company and industrial customers in Egypt.

HaYemin HeHadash (the New Right)

Within the last hour, Naftali Bennett (Education Minister and head of the Beit Yehudi Party) and Ayelet Shaked (Justice Minister and second in command at Beit Yehudi) have announced that they are leaving Beit Yehudi to form a new political party for the coming election on April 9.

Their new party will be called HaYemin HeHadash (the New Right). It is an attempt to form a coalition between secular Zionists and religious Zionists. However, as far as your humble servant can see, HaYemin HeHadash is little more than a reformulation of Beit Yehudi whose goal was the same.

So why have Bennett and Shaked opted for the name change? It would seem that their main goals are to form a “rightist’ coalition to compete with the expected “leftist” and “centrist” coalitions that are being talked about–and to try to stake out a position to the “right” of PM Netanyahu.

The sad fact is that Netanyahu is going to spend much of his time between now and the election doing everything to siphon votes away from HaYemin HeHadash and any other party on the right–just as he did in 2015.

In the end, your humble servant suspects that HaYemin HeHadash will garner no more seats than Beit Yehudi did.

In my opinion, HaYemin HeHadash would fare better in the election if Shaked were at the top of the ticket instead of Bennett. We have often written on israelstreet that the ideal government would be one led by Shaked, Miri Regev, and Tzipi Hotovely. Unfortunately, Regev and Hotovely are staunch Likudniks so such a triumvirate is extremely unlikely.

But for now, it is interesting to see how everyone on both sides of the political spectrum are jockeying for position.
