The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

In Judea and Samaria:

It has been a day like every other in Judea and Samaria with Israeli men, women, and children surviving endless “rock” and Molotov attacks.

Palestinian terrorists attacked buses in Nili and Al-Aruv.

Palestinian terrorists attacked motorists in Al-Fawwar, on the Abud Bypass Road, Ma’ale Amos, the Hatti Junction, Tekoa, Beit Furik, and Hevron among other places.

On the Gaza Border:

It has been a day like every other day along the Gaza border with Israeli men, women, and children surviving endless barrages of explosive devices launched against them by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.

Fires were started throughout the Eshkol Region, with warnings from Hamas and Islamic Jihad that they would burn southern Israel to the ground on Wednesday.

By the way, those Israeli men, women, and children have not forgotten the farcical inaction of the IDF and the government during the massive missile attack two weeks ago–a farcical inaction now dubbed “Operation Eurovision.” This flyer is still being circulated:

The protest flyer currently being circulated.

Note that the line in English: “We’re not your toys” refers to the winning song sung in last year’s Eurovision by Israeli singer Neta Barzilai. Also note the missile trails.

What the flyer is saying is that people of southern Israel believe that they are being treated as “toys” (read “missile fodder”) by the Netanyahu government.

Eight days to go . . .

Time is running out for Netanyahu to form a coalition, and he only seems to be incrementally closer to doing so. Facing a deadline of May 29, Netanyahu is scrambling to make everyone happy even to the ridiculous point of promising that there will be some 30 “Ministers” and “Deputy Ministers.”

But no one seems to be biting. Yisrael Beiteinu still cannot agree with the Shas and United Torah Judaism; Kulanu says that it will not join a coalition until Yisrael Beiteinu does; and, and, and . . .

Yesterday, Netanyahu seriously remarked that another election could be on the near horizon. Nevertheless, Netanyahu has been in this situation before and always seems to be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Let’s see if he can do it one more time.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Judea, Samaria, and Benjamin Netanyahu

How many times have we expressed on israelstreet that a de facto Palestinian state exists in Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria, and that Area C should immediately be annexed to Israel?

We base this judgement on the fact that the Palestinians have had total administrative control over A and B for the last 25 years–and security control over A for the same amount of time. We also base it on the fact that 97% of the Palestinians living in Judea and Samaria live in A and B, and that 100% of the Israelis living in Judea and Samaria live in Area C.

However, Judea and Samaria has always been a mixed bag insofar as PM Netanyahu is concerned.

Whenever an election rolls around, you can find him out in Area C blowing his horn about how no more Jewish communities will ever be destroyed and that no one supports those communities more than he does. The day each election is over and Netanyahu is returned to power, he then falls back on his old status quo position: no new communities, no annexation, and virtually no construction in C.

Nevertheless, times may be changing–and then again, may not be. President Trump’s peace plan, now set to be released after Shavuot is said to approve Israeli annexation of the communities in C. This fact threatens to destroy Netanyahu’s carefully maintained “status quo” and leaves him in a position in which he cannot be seen as being less attached to Judea and Samaria than Donald Trump.

So now we have Netanyahu suddenly seeming to support annexation. Just yesterday, Netanyahu had this to say: “The land in Judea and Samaria is not only a guarantee of Israel’s security – it is also the heritage of our forefathers.”

The reason he made this statement was because a group of former Israeli security officers submitted a letter denouncing any annexation in Judea and Samaria, ludicrously arguing that it will inevitably damage Israel’s security.

The same group of security officers also submitted previous letters in which they warned of such things as “Netanyahu is ruining the alliance with the U.S.” and that “abrogating the nuclear agreement with Iran is a disaster.” They also supported Oslo, supported the unilateral evacuation from northern Gaza, and supported a unilateral withdrawal from the Golan.

So where does this leave us?

Has Netanyahu suddenly had a change of heart about Judea and Samaria, or is he reluctantly being pushed by Trump into a position he doesn’t want to be in?

Your humble servant believes that it is the latter.

Just this morning, hundreds of police officers and Civil Administration personnel descended on Givat Tapuach West to destroy Jewish homes in the Samarian Jewish community there. An action like this speaks louder than a million words from Netanyahu.
