The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

*Another stabbing was thwarted at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron this morning when a knife-armed terrorist was captured.

*Another fire was possibly started by an explosive “balloon” from Gaza at Beit Nir.

Timeline updates . . .

Three updates from the timeline we gave you yesterday about what is happening in the next few months:

1. PM Netanyahu did not return the mandate for choosing a government to President Rivlin yesterday as expected. There seems to be some dissension in the ranks of the Kahol Levan party about forming a new government–and Netanyahu appears to be waiting to see how it all plays out.

2. Netanyahu is meeting with Benny Gantz on Wednesday apparently in a last ditch effort to get him to agree to the unity outline proposed by President Rivlin. There is no indication that he will do so.

3. Attorney General Mandelblit has agreed to a request by PM Netanyahu that his lawyers be allotted four days instead of two to argue his cases. This Wednesday and Thursday, the lawyers will defend Netanyahu against charges in Case 4000. Next Sunday and Monday, the lawyers will take on Cases 1000 and 2000.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Food, Food, And More Food!

The two day of orgy of eating is in full swing here in Israel.

Just to give you an idea of what we are all “going through” here is a sample from your humble servant’s family.

The pre-menu last night (note that each food must be eaten after a specific blessing for that food is said) including as you see: dates, pomegranate seeds, apple slices with honey, and  . . .) :

The Rosh Hashana pre-menu.

The Rosh Hashana pre-menu.

The menu last night:

After this we had fish, baked chicken, roast beef, liver, raisined rice, buttery potatoes, sliced eggplant in tomato sauce, tabouli, fried prasa (leek patties), dates stuffed with walnuts, cole slaw, cabbage, regular Israeli salad with tomatoes and cucumbers.

All served with about 10 bottles of wine and an abundance of other spirits such as your humble servant’s favorite Jack Daniel’s.

Followed by compote (fruit in a syrupy liquid).

Followed by various cakes such as apple, poppy, and chocolate–served with parve ice cream.

Topped off with coffees (Turkish, shachor (black), nes (regular) and teas.

Followed by liqueurs (Contreau, Grand Marnier, etc.).

The menu for lunch today  (who has room to eat anything after last night?):

Cholent, or as it is better known in Israel “Chamin”–which is basically a Jewish stew. Here are the ingredients, all slow-cooked in a large crock pot:

    • 3 lbs large red potatoes, peeled and halved
    • 2 whole onions, chopped
    • 2 1/2 lbs beef stew meat or brisket, cut into chunks (cooked in a separate pot in deference to the vegetarians)
    • 2 cups dried beans – lima, pinto, chickpeas, and red beans
    • 5 chopped carrots
    • 1/2 cup pearl barley
    • 3 whole garlic cloves
    • 10 eggs
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper (if spice sensitive use 1/4 tsp)
    • 1 quart low sodium chicken broth
    • 1 tbsp kosher salt
    • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
    • 1 1/2 tsp turmeric
    • 1 tsp cumin
    • 1 tsp cayenne pepper

Of course all of this is washed down again with copious amounts of wine.

The menu for lunch tomorrow:

It will be a big barbecue with two separate mangels (grills): one for the extraordinarily kosher among us, the other for just the “regular kosher.”  I won’t go into the beer, wine, and other libations nor will I detail the chicken, kabobs, shislick, steaks, and everything else likely to find its way onto the grill, but you get the idea.

As well as the myriad of salads.

Food, food, and more food! This is Rosh Hashana here in Israel.
