The News on the Israeli Street

In case you missed it . . .

*A recent survey has found that more than 50% of Israeli adults are obese, and more than 30% of Israeli children.

Today’s Blog:

The “Yitzhar” Incident

Your humble servant has never been the world’s largest fan of the so-called “Hilltop Youth”; however, I have written on numerous occasions how they are absurdly singled out for months of detention without trial during which they are routinely subjected to extreme forms of interrogation (aka torture).

I have long considered this treatment by Israel’s security services a blight on the Israeli judicial system.

Having said this, what happened Saturday night at Yitzhar was reprehensible and indefensible. However, it has been blown completely out of proportion by everyone in the media, the government, the Knesset, and the general command of the IDF.

According to all accounts, a group of IDF Golani soldiers were on a routine 3 am patrol to Givat Kumi Uri beside Yitzhar.

Once there, their jeep was blocked by approximately 30 Hilltop Youth who threw rocks at them–lightly wounding one soldier in the soldier. One or more of the Youth punctured the tires of the jeep the soldiers were using.

As already said, these actions were against the law and those rock throwers and tire puncturers should be punished. There is no excuse for what they did. Those soldiers are stationed in that area to protect the very perpetrators who attacked them.

The Yitzhar community (which the world likes to call “settlers”) quickly issued a statement condemning what happened as “scandalous and shameful”. The community added that “We demand that the youths leave Yitzhar and, until further announcement, completely remove the community’s sponsorship of their presence here, and all that this implies.”

All fine and good and as it should be.

But what rankles your humble servant are the outrageously overboard reactions from the “left” and others. Here are two examples:

*The Arab Joint List which is supporting Benny Gantz’s Kahol Lavan in the current election quagmire issued this absurd statement:

The right-wing governments’ silence with regard to settler crimes against the Palestinians has made them feel that they are above the law, and therefore it is clear that they will be ready to confront soldiers as well. The attack against the soldiers is the result of the tireless support that the government gives to the settlers.”

The head of the Labor Party, Amir Peretz, jumped in as well–asserting that he wanted to convene a meeting of the Knesset Defense Committee to take up the matter of “settler violence”. According to Peretz, what happened on Saturday night was “terrorism.”

And on and on.

Settler. Settler. Settler. Right wing. Right wing. Right wing.

To which I respond: Absurd. Absurd. Absurd.

Where are Peretz, the Joint Arab List, and all the other lefties when Palestinian terrorists attack our soldiers everyday by throwing rocks, Molotovs, IEDs, and grenades at them?

Nowhere to be seen.

And where is our pusillanimous government and all of its minions when Palestinian terrorists attack our soldiers everyday by throwing rocks, Molotovs, IEDs, and grenades at them?

Nowhere to be seen.

And where is anyone when Palestinian terrorists attack our brave Jewish community members in Judea and Samaria everyday by throwing rocks, Molotovs, IEDs, and grenades at them?

Nowhere to be seen.

But let 30 Israeli teenagers throw rocks and puncture tires and the sky falls.
