The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

More than 40 “explosive balloons” have detonated over southern Israel–including 17 during one 60 minute period late this afternoon.

In Judea and Samaria:

*The U-Junction in Gush Etzion, Al-Khader, Tekoa, Al-Aruv, the Olive Junction on the Hutz Yehuda Road, Hizma, Psagot, Beit Jala, between Beit El and Givat Assaf, Qalandiya Pass, the T-Junction in Gush Etzion, Al-Fawwar: these were 12 of some three dozen places where Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis with “rocks” and Molotovs.

The above attacks were reported by residents on the ground to hakolhayehudi, Rescue without Borders, and rotter.

*Palestinian terrorists in Jilazon opened fire on residents of Beit El with bullets piercing the residence trailers of Israelis there.

More on Netanyahu’s meeting with the Sudanese . . .

The more your humble servant thinks about PM Netanyahu’s meeting with the leader of the Sudan at Entebbe yesterday, the more remarkable it is.

Just how remarkable was summed up nicely by reporter Zvi Yezekieli on Israeli television last night“This is almost unbelievable. Sudan was a hostile terrorist state, a Hamas host, a member of the Iranian axis of evil, and now understands that the road to the West is passing through Israel. It is a knife in the back to the Palestinians because they have lost another ally.”

The High Representative of the European Union quickly rears his ugly head . . .

Borrell with Iranian FM Zarif last week. Birds of a feather.

Borrell with Iranian FM Zarif last week. Birds of a feather.

Josep Borrell, who has barely been in his job for two months, has quickly begun to imitate his predecessors. After a junket to Iran last week, Borrell suddenly issued a statement condemning and threatening Israel about annexing the Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley:

“We are particularly concerned about statements about the prospect of annexing the Jordan Valley and other parts of the West Bank. If there are steps Such, we have to respond. . . . The EU does not recognize the territories occupied by Israel in 1967.”

Interestingly, Borrell had wanted to make this statement a “unanimous statement from the EU”, but several countries refused to go along forcing him to make an individual statement.

This morning, Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded to Borrell: ” The fact that the EU’s High Representative has chosen to use threatening language towards Israel – shortly after taking office and only hours after his meetings in Iran – is unfortunate, to say the least. Such policies and practices are the best way to ensure that the EU’s role in any process is minimal.”

TODAY’S BLOG:

A Sad State of IDF Affairs

For some years now, your humble servant has been questioning the military preparedness of our IDF soldiers–even our elite soldiers such as the Golani and paratrooper brigades.

Even though they are highly motivated and capable, their experience is limited–and they spend much of their time being preached to by leftist NGOs who inculcate a defeatist attitude of political correctness.

When you compare their readiness with that of Hamas and Hezbollah fighters, one wonders how we will fare in wars which will surely come.

Today, Benny Amidror who used to head the IDF’s Combat Training Department issued a warning that covered these exact points during an interview on FM 103 radio:

“First of all you need understand that something in their [Hamas and Hezbollah] favor is that they have their area, that gives then an advantage. The soldier in the IDF – in Golani, in the Paratroopers, and others too – the demand is that they will be able to act against all kinds of enemies, a range of enemies, and a range of operations. The enemy’s life is a lot more simple, they’re there in one place, beside their homes, all they need to do is go into their tunnel.

I appreciate that the fighters of Hezbollah and Hamas are higher quality when it comes to their level of service and individual, class, and unit training, than IDF soldiers, since they are older, serve longer than our mandatory service soldiers, and practice more than IDF soldiers, who work in policing areas. They have a fighting spirit that they didn’t used to have, and the end result is, that if you look at the bottom line, the IDF does not dare cross the border into Gaza.

A long time ago, we needed to transfer this task to the Border Police, whose soldiers have high self-esteem and are willing to endanger themselves more than IDF soldiers.  We were and are a hobbyist army. The Border Police can do things better than the army.”

None of this bodes well for our country.
