Quote of the Day

“If a person is merciful to the cruel, then one day he will be cruel to the merciful.”

The sister of murdered Rabbi Shai Ohayon speaking at his funeral Wednesday night

In making this statement which comes from the Midrash, the Rabbi’s sister condemned the government policies that led to his murder (see yesterday’s blog). Being merciful to terrorists by glossing over their actions with “humanitarian” platitudes and blathering absurd excuses will eventually come home to roost on those glossing and blathering.

As Maimonides noted in his The Guide to the Perplexed: “If a wicked and calculating person who killed intentionally seeks sanctuary among us, we must not provide him with asylum and not have mercy upon him because compassion towards the wicked is cruelty toward all human beings.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Nahal Oz and Alumim: the two targets of Palestinian terrorists in Gaza early this morning.

Nahal Oz and Alumim: the two targets of Palestinian terrorists in Gaza early this morning.

At 5:07 am this morning, incoming missile alarms sounded for Nahal Oz and Alumim. A barrage of six missiles were launched out of Gaza, all of which apparently struck in open areas.

More than 30 fires were ignited throughout southern Israel yesterday as dozens of more explosive balloons were launched out of Gaza. Interestingly, one explosive balloon cluster landed in Dura, a Palestinian settlement south of Hevron.

The missiles and the fires come on the heels of reports that the Qatari ambassador left Gaza in a huff yesterday unwilling to accede to Hamas demands. This anger will undoubtedly subside, but in the meantime, southern Israel will feel the brunt of the failed blackmail payout.

The daily Corona (Covid-19) update as of 8 am this morning . . .

There are 110,403 confirmed casesan increase of 2,000 since this time yesterday

87,726 of these confirmed cases have recoveredan increase of 1,206

409 are in critical condition–an increase of 5

115 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—a decrease of 4

884 have diedan increase of 9

There are 22,677 active cases.

MADA reported yesterday that it has now administered more than one million Corona tests in Israel including 103,000 who received a test last week. Of course, some people may have received multiple tests; however, given that there is only a population of about 9 million in Israel, this is a high number.

The razing of Ma’ale Shai . . .

Two days ago following the murder of Rabbi Shai Ohayon, three Israeli families set up a fledgling communities named Ma’ale Shai on a hilltop in Area B of Judea and Samaria.

The community consisted of two houses.

Two houses.

Yesterday, less than 24 hours later, officials from the Civil Administration led a contingent of Israel Police and Border Guards to Ma’ale Shai where they destroyed the two houses.

In the process, they beat up at least one of the residents. Click here to see the police in action; note how one Jewish young man is punched repeatedly in the face.

Just think for a moment how absurd this entire episode at Ma’ale Shai was. Two little houses immediately destroyed amidst more than 50,000 illegal Palestinian buildings in Area C which have been left untouched for years.

The animus that the Civil Administration has against Jewish community members in Judea and Samaria is mind boggling.

Amending the Law of Return . . .

As you may not know, a bill has been introduced in the Knesset which would amend the Law of Return by making a person whose only Jewish connection is that of a grandparent ineligible for aliya. In other words, a person whose parents are not Jewish would no longer be eligible.

The law is being proposed because of the vast number of such people who immigrated to Israel in the 1990s and have made no effort to become Jewish, and in fact, have set up communities everywhere within the country to maintain their non-Jewish lifestyle and culture.

The bottom drops out of the dollar . . .

The dollar fell to a 12 year low against the shekel yesterday. As of this morning, it is trading at 3.36 shekels to the dollar.

In response, the Bank of Israel has gone on a dollar buying spree adding to its already huge 140 billion dollar reserves.

The president of the Israel Manufacturer’s Union commented that Israeli exporters “are facing two diseases at the same time: the coronavirus and the depreciation of the dollar.”

TODAY’S BLOG:

“There is no justice here.”

The above quotation is from Ayelet Shaked who was commenting on the High Court ruling yesterday that the Jewish community of Mitzpe Kramim must be evacuated during the next three years and then destroyed.

Overturning a District Court decision, negating the Attorney General’s guidelines,  and showing indifference to the Israel Ombudsman’s opinion, the Court decided on a vote of 2-1 yesterday that another Jewish community must be eradicated.

How nauseous was this ruling?

Mitzpe Kramim was created by the state of Israel back in the 1990s and is now home to 45 families. The founding families had been forcibly evacuated from another location and told where to rebuild by our government.

As one resident said yesterday: “They’re going to destroy my home. A home built by the state. A home which was evacuated from another location, and the state decided where to relocate it. The home of a law-abiding citizen. A tax-payer who is second-in-command of an IDF battalion. A person wounded in a terror attack.”

The ruling was yet another example of the bizarrely biased way the High Court operates.

The Israeli Supreme Court consists of 15 Justices. Those 15 Justices can also sit as the Israeli High Court of Justice. The ideological bent of each of the Justices is well known; in other words, everyone knows who is liberal and who is conservative.

In either iteration as Supreme Court or High Court, a three-judge panel normally decides each case thereby creating a system that is inherently unfair because the Chief Justice who chooses the three people automatically knows how they are going to rule.

In this context, it is no surprise that we get one 2-1 decision after another–all of which favor the political bias of the Chief Justice who is currently the uber-liberal Esther Hayut. Just last week we had the 2-1 decision not to destroy the home of the murderer of Amit Ben Yigal.

To repeat what Ayelet Shaked said yesterday following the Mitzpe Kramim ruling; “There is no justice here.”
