The Absurd Action of the Day

This tiny memorial to the murdered teenager Rene Shnerb was erected this morning.

This tiny memorial to the murdered teenager Rene Shnerb was erected this morning.

And by afternoon, large forces belonging to the Israel Civil Administration had swooped in to destroy it.

Why?

What possible harm was it doing except to remember a wonderful young girl who was blown apart at the Dolev Spring?

The Biggest Leftist on the “Right”: Benjamin Netanyahu

Will the government fall tonight, and if it does what will replace it?

It has been a day of back and forth as a critical vote comes before the Knesset tonight. That vote, as we have previously reported, would extend rights to Israelis living in Judea an Samaria for another five years. Unless it is approved, those Israelis will lose numerous rights as Israeli citizens–rights such as the right to vote, to serve in the army, to be part of the national health care system, and much more.

One would think that the conservative opposition led by Netanyahu would be eager to support this measure. However, Netanyahu has ordered his minions to vote against it because he sees an opportunity to bring down the government. Specifically, Gideon Sa’ar and his New Hope Party have announced that they will leave the Coalition unless the law is approved.

But if the Opposition votes against the law, the only way for it to pass is for the Islamist Ra’am to vote for it. To put it a different way, Ra’am would have to vote for a measure that supports those that it calls “settlers.” Who knows what will happen when the law comes up for a vote tonight?

As previously stated, it has been a day of back and forth–and one of specifically harsh criticism of Netanyahu. As the head of the Yesha Council has questioned “how can Netanyahu possibly call himself the leader of the right if he is willing to throw Jewish community members in Judea and Samaria under the bus?”

Another person on the attack has been Avigdor Liberman whom your humble servant detests. Nevertheless, Liberman has correctly pointed out this morning that Netanyahu long ago lost any claim he had to be on the “right.”

Liberman noted what we have been pointing out here at OneIsrael for years:

–in January 1997, Netanyahu transferred Hevron to the PLO.

–in October 1998, Netanyahu transferred more territory from Judea and Samaria to the Palestinians as part of the Wye Agreement.

–in February 2005, Netanyahu voted in favor of Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza.

–in June 2009, Netanyahu signed off on the establishment of a Palestinian state in his infamous Bar-Ilan speech.

–in November 2009, Netanyahu pushed through a cabinet decision to freeze construction in all communities in Judea and Samaria. That freeze remained in place for eleven years until Netanyahu left last year and even extended to the proposed Jerusalem neighborhoods of Givat Hamatos and Atarot.

–in 2019-20, Netanyahu constantly talked first about applying Israeli sovereignty to all of Judea and Samaria–and later to just the Jordan Valley. What did he do? Nothing.

The simple fact is that Benjamin Netanyahu is no leader of the right.

Not only did he actively suppress Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria during his tenures as Prime Minister, but also he refused to work for Israeli sovereignty over these areas. And more than that, he continuously turned over or voted to turn over land to the Palestinians while declaring his support for a Palestinian state.

As of this hour, the vote has yet to be taken in the Knesset–though OneIsrael believes that the Coalition Government will once again figure out a way to remain in power. If not, what kind of dawn will we have tomorrow morning in Israeli politics?
