The Disingenuous Quote of the Day

“We did not hurt the ultra-Orthodox. There may have been talk, but it stopped there. I was also on guard. The taxation on disposable dishes and sugary drinks was not directed against ultra-Orthodox, but was intended to change behavior, and the budgets for the ultra-Orthodox sector were not touched. They really have nothing to complain about.”

Ayelet Shaked, Interior Minister under the previous government

Who is kidding whom? Former Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman with his extreme animus against the ultra-orthodox specifically targeted them in numerous ways. Walk into any ultra-orthodox supermarket with its row upon row of disposable dishes and “sugary” drinks, and tell your humble servant that the low income ultra-orthodox were not hurt by Liberman’s tax on these items.

Both taxes are being reversed by the current government.

Stabbing attack:

A Palestinian stabbing attack was thwarted at a crossing in the vicinity of Silwad when soldiers spotted a knife-armed terrorist and tried to disarm him. In the ensuing struggle the terrorist was shot.

On the economic front . . .

Israel’s consumer price index rose by 0.3% to 5.3% last month.

This is the highest it has been in 20 years.

Sour Cream And Leavened Bread:

The Desperate Need For Judicial Reform

This morning we have another example of why Israel desperately needs judicial reform. A petition has been brought to the High Court of Justice by someone demanding that the IDF allow sour cream and leavened bread into IDF dining rooms on Passover.

There is no reason in the world why a person should have been allowed to bring this case to the High Court.

As the attorney for the IDF responded to the petition in Court this morning: “The position of the respondents is that the provisions set forth in the army orders prohibiting the introduction of hametz into the IDF bases and its facilities are provisions established by law and authority, they are reasonable and proportionate, and there is no reason to interfere with them.”

However, note the word “reasonable”.

One part of the proposed judicial reform is to eliminate “unreasonable” as a determinant in judicial decisions. As it stands now, High Court justices could care less about whether a case should be decided by law; they can and do make decisions based on their own opinion about what is “reasonable.” Every lawyer must make an appeal to “reasonableness” when arguing a case before the Court.

If you can believe this, to further buttress her “reasonable” argument, the IDF attorney also pointed out that the IDF is “reducing harm to soldiers who wish to eat chametz” before Passover by establishing new timing for training operations (none to begin before the 12th of Nissan at 6:00 am).

“Reducing harm to soldiers who wish to eat chametz”?

It is unbelievable what we have come to.
