UPDATE 5 pm Israel time Friday:

It has been a rough afternoon in Judea and Samaria.

On the one hand it has been business as usual. Urged on by Israeli and international lawbreakers who joined in the “action”, dozens of Palestinians streamed out of Friday prayers at their mosques about four hours ago and proceeded to assault Israeli security forces with “rocks” and Molotov cocktails in Qalandiya, Kafr Qaddum, Naalin, Maale Shomron, and Bilin.

What was not business as usual this afternoon was the mob of 3000 Palestinians who marched from the Irea (City Hall) in Hebron to the checkpoint that guards the entrance to Hebron’s Jewish community. Once there, they were turned back by IDF soldiers, Border Guard police, and some 200 Palestinian police officers–but not before pelting the security forces with numerous projectiles.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Intifada.

It is a word that somehow absurdly conjures up the idea of “noble rock-throwing resistance to Israeli occupation” to all of those in the international community who would like to see Israel disappear from the map.

To Israelis, however, it means the stabbings, shootings, and murderous suicide attacks carried out by Palestinian terrorists from 1987 to 1993 and then again from September 2000 until 2005. During these periods, virtually every Israeli had a family member or friend who was killed or maimed by the vicious Palestinian barbarism.

The question of the moment seems to be: Are we witnessing the beginning of the third Palestinian intifada?

For over a year now, your humble servant has been reporting on the ever increasing daily attacks taking place against Jewish community members throughout Judea and Samaria. For most of that time, these assaults have received little play in the Israeli or international media. There might have been the odd headline if a “rock” thrower managed to kill an Israeli motorist or if an infiltrator stabbed or shot an Israeli citizen, but mostly the daily litany of terrorism has been neatly swept under the rug.

As this has been taking place, the head of the PLO, Mahmoud Abbas, has increasingly been warning of a third intifada “in the offing”. No one has really taken Abbas too seriously because Abbas has made a lifetime of warning Israel about “terrible things” that would happen if he did not get more money or if Jerusalem was not returned to the Palestinians or if .  . .  His usual threat has been to warn the world that he will resign.

But the net effect has been to instill in young Palestinians in Judea and Samaria that perhaps they should be starting a third intifada. And now that they have seen Hamas in Gaza wring a myriad of concessions out of Israel through the use of violence starting with the huge prisoner release in exchange for Gilad Shalit and ending with the ridiculous concessions made by Netanyahu to stop the rocket fire, it is not hard to understand why Palestinians would ratchet up their terrorism to get what they want.

However, even Mahmoud Abbas realizes that he is walking a tightrope. As the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria turn to increasing violence, they turn away from the PLO and turn to Hamas. Despite the recent “victory” that Abbas engineered at the United Nations, a third intifada would almost instantly render Abbas irrelevant. So, while the PLO authorized a huge Hamas demonstration in Shechem (Nablus) two days ago, it was not surprising to see PLO “police” out in Hebron this afternoon working side by side with Israeli security personnel.

The Hamas march in Shechem (Nablus). Is the PLO still in control?

The danger for Abbas is that the day will soon come when either he will no longer be able to restrain the Palestinian street or he will no longer be able to control the PLO “police”. After all, he must remember what happened in Gaza.

The danger for Israel lies in both directions. Both the PLO and Hamas are Israel’s mortal enemies. The PLO works with Israeli security forces to keep Hamas at bay in Judea and Samara–but at the same time has its military wing in Gaza firing missiles at Israel. A day of reckoning is coming when Israel will have to confront the PLO and Hamas in Judea and Samaria.

Has a third intifada begun? Your humble servant tends to think “not yet”, but check back again tomorrow–who knows what the tonight will bring?
