34

SPECIAL NOTE:

Please note the time change of the updates in today’s blog. For the next six months, this blog will normally be posted at around 8 pm Israel time–instead of 10 am Israel time.

UPDATES 7 pm Israel time Thursday:

*There are reports tonight that the Syrian regime is on “the verge of collapse”–and that Assad’s forces are beginning to fire Scud missiles at Syrian rebel forces. It may be only a few hours or days until those Scud missiles are loaded with chemical warheads.

*After an investigation that has dragged on for 12 years, Israel Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has just announced that he has dropped the main criminal charges against FM Lieberman, but has declared his “intent to indict” Lieberman on charges of breach of trust in a case involving the appointment of an ambassador to Belarus. For the moment, however, Lieberman remains foreign minister.

*Judea and Samaria continue to writhe in “rock-throwing” turmoil–all the more so following the shooting yesterday of a Palestinian terrorist in Hevron (the subject of today’s blog).

TODAY’S BLOG:

Yesterday we saw the fruit of the IDF policy of restraint that is being employed against Palestininan rioters on the Gaza border, in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria–a policy formulated by our so-called “Defense” Minister Ehud Barak, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, and PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

By not taking action against terrorists and running in the face of Palestinian confrontation and intimidation, the IDF has emboldened Palestinians to assault police, border guards and soldiers.

The facts about what happened in Hevron (Hebron) on yesterday are not in dispute.

At 6:30 pm, Mohammed Al-Salaymeh, a resident of Hevron, walking near the Tomb of the Patriarchs.  His actions attracted the attention of a Border Police Patrol, one of whose members asked him for his ID. Al-Salaymeh began to fight with the patrolman, then pulled a pistol out of his back pocket and pointed it at the head of a Border Guard. At this point, “A”, the Sergeant in the patrol unit and a Border Police Commander, pulled out her gun, fired three times, and killed Al-Salaymeh.

Later last night, other details about Al-Salaymeh emerged:

*Yesterday was Al-Salaymeh’s 17th birthday–after he was killed, his Palestinian friends posted a picture of him on Twitter sitting beside his birthday cake earlier in the day.

*He was the brother of  terrorist Awad Salima Ziyad who was convicted in 1994 of murder, attempted murder, throwing a Molotov cocktail, and membership in a banned organization. Ziyad served 17 years in an Israeli prison before being released in the Gilad Shalit deal.

*The gun that Al-Salaymeh pulled out of his pocket and aimed at the head of the Border Guard was a “fake” toy gun.

The "fake" gun that Al-Sulaymeh pointed at the head of the Border policeman. The new "restraint" policy of the IDF led him to believe that he could do so with impunity.

Do any of these revelations make any difference in regard to what happened? Of course not.

As “A” is reported to have said today:

“It didn’t change it for me, because in those same moments you don’t have time to think or be confused. For me it was a real pistol in every sense of the word pointed at my soldier and it’s my responsibility to act, because if I don’t  kill him my friend will be killed, and I won’t let this happen. After they investigated the incident it turned out it was a fake gun, but it didn’t change how I felt about it. I’m happy this ended with no injuries on our side and I’m sure any other officer in my situation would have done what I did.”

Also last night, in an egregious violation of publishing guidelines in Israel, the left-wing Israeli media not only published “A’s” name–but also her picture. By this morning, she has received thousands of death threats on Facebook and elsewhere.

Your humble servant strongly feels that:

*Barak, Gantz, and Netanyahu must immediately revise IDF rules of engagement.

*every Israeli media outlet that published “A’s” information should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

*”A” should be cited for her courage and bravery. Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch spoke for many of us this morning when he told “A”: “You acted as you were trained, with courage, determination and without hesitation, as is expected of Border Guard combatants.”
