TODAY’S BLOG:

It is always striking to your humble servant to see how the “pre-1967 lines” (actually the 1949 Armistice lines) have become sacrosanct in the surreal world of Middle East “peace-making”.

If only the world could only spin backwards to June 4, 1967–the day before the beginning of the Six Day War–the President Obamas, European Unions, United Nations, and Arabs of the world would have us believe that the Middle East would be a better place.

The peaceful Palestinians would have a peaceful country of their own in which to bucolically shepherd their sheep and harvest their olives; Israel’s loving, peaceful neighbors would continue living in genuine peace with their tiny Jewish friend; and the colonialist aggressor nation of Israel would be relegated to what Abba Eban once called Israel’s undefendable “Auschwitz” lines.

Your humble servant thought that this morning, in light of the European Union’s declaration of yesterday concerning “pre-1967 lines”, we would take a short stroll down memory lane to see what was going on in the neighborhood on that fateful day.

On June 4, 1967:

*The 75,000 man Syrian Army was massed all along its border with Israel-especially having illegally taken up positions on the eastern shore of the Kineret (Sea of Galilee) after having overrun the demilitarized buffer zone around the eastern side of the body of water. Of course, taking illegal actions was nothing new for the Syrians; the Syrian Army had been killing Israeli civilians in the valleys below the Golan Heights for almost 20 years–and had become the primary supporter of Palestinian terrorists committing terrorist attacks in Israel.

*The Egyptian Army had repositioned 100,000 solders in the Sinai–including all of its infantry, armored, and mechanized divisions. Its armament included 950 tanks and 1000 artillery pieces. One month before, in May of 1967, Egypt had closed the Strait of Tiran to all trade to and from Israel effectively cutting off the Red Sea to Israel.

*The Jordanian Army had massed 55,000 soldiers on its Jordan River Border with Israel. This force included 12 battalions of artillery, six batteries of mortars, and 300 tanks. Another division of Iraqi infantry with 100 tanks was on the Jordanian border. One Jordanian general in the so-called “West Bank” promised the Jordanians and Palestinians under his command that they would be in Tel Aviv in three days.

We all know what happened. On the morning of June 5th, Israel carried out a preemptive strike on Syrian and Egyptian air forces destroying hundreds of enemy planes on the ground and in the air.

But what is not so well known is that Israel specifically did not target the Jordanian air force–and that Hashemite air force proceeded to bomb West Jerusalem, the suburbs of Tel Aviv, and the Galilee. Yet Israel still did not attack Jordan as Israeli PM Levi Eshkol sent an urgent message to King Abdullah pleading with him to halt hostilities.

Yet Abdullah, deluded by Egyptians and Syrians into thinking that the Israelis were being defeated on those fronts, pressed the attack and sent in his Jordanian and Palestinian soldiers to assault Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem and government hill ridge. Still Israel held its fire–and told Abdullah that if he would stop the attack, Israel would not attack the Old City.

But the Jordanians and Palestinians refused to stop–and finally, Israel went on the offensive capturing the eastern neighborhoods of the city–especially the Old City of Jerusalem.

In short, the Middle East of June 4th, 1967 was no peaceful bucolic place.  Israel was surrounded by Arab armies all bent on its destruction. The so-called “peaceful Palestinians” who lived in the Jordanian-occupied area west of the Jordan River fought along side their their fellow Arabs.

It wasn’t enough that the Palestinians and Jordanians  had cleansed all of eastern Jerusalem of any Jews between 1948 and 1967. On June 4th, 1967, they dreamed of ethnically cleansing all Jews from “Palestine.”

This was the dream of Arabs and international “peacemakers” then, and it is the dream of Arabs and international “peacemakers” now.

The Arabs and the world will never wake up to the reality of Israel.

Addendum:

Of course, it is not June 4, 1967 that the Palestinians really want to turn the clock back to, it is November 28, 1947–the day before the U.N. vote to re-create the state of Israel and an Arab state west of the Jordan River.
