Die! Mispeak!

NUMBER OF DAYS UNTIL THE ISRAELI ELECTION: 14

ISRAELSTREET endorses NAFTALI BENNETT for Prime Minister

Head of “HaBayit HaYehudi” (The Jewish Home) political party

“We can’t have peace with the Palestinians. Enough. How long can we talk about this? We can only reach coexistence . . .”

UPDATES 7 pm Israeli time Tuesday:

**Water water everywhere . . . Israel has been underwater much of the day with major transportation arteries closed. People have been kayaking down the Ayalon freeway into Tel Aviv and inner-tubing down rushing streams everywhere.

**There has been more destruction of Jewish holy places in Jerusalem. This time the Palestinians focused their attack on the Jewish cemetery on the Mt. of Olives. Numerous graves have been desecrated and destroyed:

On the Mount of Olives: one row of graves desecrated by Palestinian terrorists yesterday.

**Voting began in the Israeli election today–by the estimated 4000 Israeli embassy and consulate workers around the world.

TODAY’S BLOG:

“Mispeak! Die!”

Your humble servant remembers a particularly funny scene that took place years ago in a Straw Hat pizza parlor here in northern California (where your humble servant arrived late last night).

It was an “all you can eat pizza night”, and the children were scarfing down the pizza like animals. At some point, my wife told the kids: “Die! Die!” Well, she didn’t exactly “tell” those words to the kids; she shouted them at the kids–loud enough for everyone at the surrounding tables to hear.

The look of horror on the faces of those people is something I’ll never forget. Of course, their horror turned to smiles when I told them all that she was not threatening to kill our children–but was just telling them “Stop! you’ve had enough!” in Hebrew.*

I mention all of this today because the words of Naftali Bennett keep ringing in my ears from yesterday:

“Lo nitan la’asot shalom em a Palestiniam. Die. Ad ma efshar ledeber itam al zay?”

“We can’t have peace with the Palestinians. Enough. How long can we talk about this?

When was the last time you heard an Israeli politician speak so honestly and realistically about the situation? And that in a nutshell is precisely why Bennett has experienced such a surge in popularity. He is the only person on the scene not held prisoner to political correctness–he is the only person who tells it like it is.

It is time to stop offering “gestures of peace” to the Palestinians. It is time to stop trying to get Palestinians to return to the negotiating table. The simple truth is that if and when the Palestinians ever decide they want peace, they need to come to Israel. We will always be willing to talk–if there is something to talk about and someone to talk to.

Addendum:

*In a different context, “dayenu” (pronounced “die ainu”) is one of the most treasured words in Hebrew, spoken by every Jewish family at the Passover Seder. As we are recounting what Pharoah did to the Jews thousands of years ago, we of course focus on the exodus (Arami oved ivi), then sing the song called the Dayenu, a praise to God for 15 miracles He has performed. Each one of them, including the miracle of persuading the Pharoah to let the Jews leave Egypt, would have been enough for Him to be praised.
