UPDATES 6 pm Sunday Israel time:
The Shin Bet report of terrorist attacks in February is out, and your humble servant believes that it is severely understated.
According to Israel’s security agency, there were 139 Palestinian attacks (“rocks”, Molotov cocktails, and IEDs) against Israeli citizens in February. If we are to believe the numbers, 100 of these attacks took place in Judea and Samaria– 84 of which were Molotov cocktail attacks. Shin Bet would also have us believe that only 38 attacks took place in Jerusalem–35 of which were Molotov cocktail attacks.
These numbers are simply not believable. On any given day, there are from 5 to 10 “rock” attacks in Judea and Samaria alone. It is in this context that FM Lieberman commented yesterday the IDF must change its rules of engagement to allow soldiers to fire on “rock throwing terrorists.” Lieberman went on to say: “Rock throwing must be treated like shooting firearms. Only this kind of change will stop civilians and soldiers from being targeted by Arab rioters and prevent disasters.”
Lieberman could not be more correct. As israelstreet has reported for more than a year and a half–the situation in Judea and Samaria has become completely out of control. In large part this has been due to the leadership of Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz–both of whom have been more interested in attacking Jewish community members than Palestinian terrorists.
As PM Netanyahu’s appointments were announced yesterday, there was nothing but good news for Judea and Samaria. Moshe “Bogie” Yaalon was appointed Minister of Defense, and Danny Danon was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense.
Both of these are excellent choices. Yaalon was the hardline IDF Chief of Staff from July 9, 2002 until February of 2005–and was particularly focused on quelling the second intifada (the reason that Yaalon was dismissed in 2005 was that he opposed the Gaza disengagement plan of Ariel Sharon). Danon is noted for his support of the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria–and has proposed laws in the Knesset that would annex Area C to Israel.
Your humble servant leaves you this morning with some of Bogie Yaalon’s most famous quotes:
“The Palestinian threat harbours cancer-like attributes that have to be severed. There are all kinds of solutions to cancer. Some say it’s necessary to amputate organs but at the moment I am applying chemotherapy” (August 2002).
“We have to confront the Iranian revolution immediately. There is no way to stabilize the Middle East today without defeating the Iranian regime. The Iranian nuclear program must be stopped . . . We have to consider killing Ahmadinejad. All options must be considered” (January 2008).
“We have become accustomed to Arabs being permitted to live everywhere, in the Negev, Galilee, Shechem (Nablus), and Jenin, while there are areas [unfortunately] where Jews are not allowed to live. We caused this . . . Regarding the issue of the settlements, in my opinion Jews can and should live everywhere in the Land of Israel” (August 2009).
