UPDATES 7 pm Israel time, Saturday, January 18 2014:
*Various sources have reported today that John Kerry will present his “framework for negotiations” in Aqaba, Jordan before the end of the month. The document is expected to be “vague” and “flexible” in order to allow the parties the maximum room to maneuver.
In advance of its release, the Palestinians are already blasting it as severely biased toward Israel and a non-starter. One of the primary Palestinian negotiators, Nabil Shaath, said yesterday that Kerry’s document abandons the “1967 borders” by calling for land swaps, does not address the so-called Palestinian “right of return”, and leaves Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty and security.
Where is the American State Department condemnation of these comments from the Palestinians? Nowhere to be heard.
*The Egyptian military continues its war on the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Hamas in Gaza. Yesterday another 5 Brotherhood members were killed in skirmishes with the Army, and 8 more smuggling tunnels were found leading into Gaza and destroyed.
Interestingly, the contents of those tunnels included 100 kg of hashish, five “wagon” loads of the drug Tramadol, three motorcycles, several trucks, and a large quantity of auto parts.
Yesterday saw another rash of incidents involving Palestinians throwing “rocks”, Molotov cocktails, and IEDs at Israeli security personnel. To give you some idea of what Israeli forces are facing, today’s blog presents three pictures taken in the last 24 hours.
To begin with, the world reads “rocks” and thinks pebbles. The truth is something else:
When Israeli forces respond with non-lethal means such as tear gas, does this stop the attacks?
And who is it that Israelis face? Palestinians, international lawbreakers, international “press”–all of whom are eager to provoke a confrontation:
Such is the reality in Judea, Samaria, and on the border with Gaza. Day after day and month after month.
