Well, one thing is new.
Outrageously new at that. But paradoxically, not surprising.
As you may not know, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is coming to Israel next Tuesday. Actually, his visit is just one part of a tour which will first take him to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, then to Israel and Ramallah, and finally to Amman.
Supposedly, the Israel part of the trip will focus on “exploring ways to stop the current wave of Palestinian violence against Israelis” and to further negotiate a new defense package between Israel and the U.S.–a defense package made necessary by the Obama Administration’s appeasement agreement with Iran (by the way the stops in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Amman are also about new defense packages).
So far this all sounds innocuous.
But wait. It turns out that U.S. government actually demanded a quid pro quo from Israel.
Specifically, the Obama Administration has requested the “good will gesture” of Israel issuing building permits in eastern Jerusalem to Arabs upon Biden’s arrival.
Can you believe this?
The Obama Administration castigates Israel for every single apartment that Jews build in Jerusalem and now wants Israel to issue building permits for Arabs?
The Obama Administration wants to reward Mahmoud Abbas for his endless incitement by changing facts on the ground in eastern Jerusalem?
Fortunately, it was announced this morning that Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has refused to comply with the absurd American “request.”
As Barkat correctly noted, the municipality of Jerusalem and the state of Israel do not discriminate in the issuing of building permits on the bases of religion, race or sex.
Again, the Obama Administration’s “request” is astonishing because of its outright hypocrisy, but not surprising because of its outright support of the Palestinians.
