. . . BREAKING NEWS . . .

8:00 pm: Demonstrations, protests, and petitions erupt across Israel in support of the IDF soldier who has been detained by the IDF for killing the terrorist in Hebron on Thursday.

7:43 pm: IDF soldier wounded near Kedumim when assaulted by Palestinian terrorists. No further info at this time.

UPDATES 9 am Israel time:

–>Palestinian terrorism continues unabated.

*Another Friday, another 20+ “rock” and Molotov attacks. The residents of Judea and Samaria suffered the brunt of the assaults at such places at Beit Ummar and Hebron.

*At 6:44 pm, Palestinian terrorists in Gaza launched a missile into the Chof Ashkelon region of southern Israel near Zikim. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the IDF has deployed Iron Dome batteries in the Zikim and Sderot areas. Why there is not a permanent Iron Dome battery stationed in Sderot is unfathomable.

*At 4:36 pm, there was an attempted stabbing at the Jerusalem checkpoint at Issawiya. A 15-year-old Palestinian was asked for her ID card, and she pulled out a knife and tried to stab a soldier. The soldier was not wounded, and the Palestinian was captured.

* At 9:24 am, a Palestinian stabbing attack was thwarted at exactly the same place in Hebron as the attack occurred on Thursday. No Israelis were wounded, and the terrorist was captured.

–>The saga of the Thursday shooting in Hebron continues.

Read yesterday’s israelstreet blog for context. The soldier in question has been arrested and will apparently be charged with murder.

This idiotic decision comes in spite of evidence which came to light yesterday supporting his version of events (that there were shouted warnings that the wounded terrorist might be about to detonate a suicide vest, and that the terrorist begin to move his right hand).

In fact, a new video of the event has emerged in which you can hear the shouts for everyone to stand back because the terrorist may be about to detonate himself (click here to watch the video if you can understand Hebrew). But the emergence of this video has not stopped the leftist Israeli TV networks from continually showing the “audio-less” video produced by the Palestinian camerawoman working for B’Tselem.

Meanwhile, there was demonstration in support of the soldier in Hebron yesterday.

By the way, the IDF spokesman, so-called “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon, and PM Netanyahu have all been deluged with criticism following their rush to condemn the soldier without even giving him a chance to defend himself.

In particular, one reservist noted that in an operation to kill Abu Jihad in Tunisia many years ago, Abu Jihad was shot at point blank range after he was already wounded.

And who was the shooter you may ask? None other than the commander of the operation, Moshe Ya’alon.

Israelstreet applauds Ya’alon for his action in killing Abu Jihad in Tunisia, and the soldier in Hebron for killing the terrorist on Thursday.

–> Israeli Brig. General Munir Amir died in the crash of his small plane yesterday.

The head of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria, Amir took off in his light plane from Haifa and crashed a short time later near Misgav in the Galilee region.

As you might gather from his name, Amir was an Israeli-Arab–specifically a Druze–whose death is a tremendous loss to the Druze community. He will always be remembered as excellent soldier, beloved family man, and one who broke through many glass ceilings on his way up the IDF hierarchy.

May his memory be blessed.

TODAY’S BLOG:

“Quietly”, almost under the radar, the war continues raging along the Israeli-Syrian border. But before we describe what is happening, let’s get some points of reference:

zzzz4map

On the above map:

1. Locate the Syrian-Jordanian border in the lower left part of the graphic. Note the two main main roads running from Damascus to Jordan.

2. Locate Miskin (actually Sheikh Miskin, alternately spelled Sheikh Maskin).

3. Locate Quneitra.

Now take a look at who controls what along the border and inside Syria in close proximity to Israel:

supercontrolmap

Based on the above map:

1. Note that the Syrian rebels, as well as Jubhat al Nucera (alt. spelling Jabhat al Nusra) are affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

2. Note that there are now three forces arrayed against Israel on what used to be the Syrian border. Going from south to north, Israel faces Islamic State, the Al-Qaeda Syrian rebels, and further north along the Lebanese border (look at the first map above)–a mixture of Hezbollah and Iranian forces.

3. Note that the Syrian rebels control part of the main road between Miskin and the Jordan border.

So what is the news of this morning?

It now appears that the forces of Islamic State are making a new push into Syrian rebel territory to the north and the east. To the north, they seem to be moving in the general direction of Quneitra. To the east, they are attacking toward Miskin.

From a strategic point of view, their goals would appear to be to solidify their position along what was the Israel-Syrian border, and to try to take over at least a part of the supply line running from Jordan to Damascus.

From Israel’s point of view, which group is worse to have on the border: Al-Qaeda or Islamic State? Both are implacable enemies–and both will eventually begin to attack this country if they survive attacking each other.
