The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours intensified . . .

On the Gaza border:

An estimated 9000 “demonstrators” attacked our soldiers at the border yesterday with Molotovs, grenades, “rocks”, and bullets. In one incident, terrorists threw a large IED at one of our sniper teams; miraculously, it did not explode. There were more than 20 attempts to blow up or cut through the fence in order to infiltrate Israel.

All were repulsed.

Barrages of incendiary kites and balloons were sent from eastern Gaza into southern Israel resulting in fires in such places as Be’eri:

What was the IDF response to all of this?

There was none.

Except, pathetically, to allow the Kerem Shalom and Erez Crossing to remain open.

In Judea and Samaria:

Silwad, Route 60 near Al-Khader, Halhul, Kiryat Arba, near Turmusayya,  Deir Abu Mash’al, on Route 443, Emmanuel, Binyamin, Tekoa, near Amos, Luban a-Sharqiya, Psagot, Elon Moreh, Ras Karkar, Kochav Yaakov, north of Ofra, Moshav Fazael, Hizma, Hevron, outside of Qalqilya: these and numerous other places were where Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli men, women, and children.

The above attacks were reported to hakolhayehudi, rotter, Rescue 443, Rescue Judea and Samaria, and other agencies.

A new twist in the Gaza blame game . . .

As is obvious from the above, there has been a general uptick in the violence on the Gaza border as a “ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas seems as elusive as ever.

But instead of blaming Israel yesterday, Hamas spokesmen blamed the PLO. Hamas spokesman Fathi Hamad was very specific: “Abbas is the reason for the failure of the negotiations on the truce.”

Bravo to President Trump again! . . .

The Trump Administration announced last night that it has suspended all funding for the despicable UNRWA. In making the announcement, the U.S. said that it would look for other ways to supply aid to the Palestinians.

Though the Administration did not explicitly say so, the move indicates a rejection of everything UNRWA stands for including the bogus notion that there are some 5,000,000+ Palestinian refugees in the world.

As you can imagine, reaction to the announcement was not long in coming.

Mahmoud Abbas, through his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudaina, declared that it was “a serious attack in violation of UN resolutions.” He added that “the U.S. has no more role in the region.”

And, within hours of the Trump announcement, Germany declared that it would dramatically increase its funding of UNRWA.

Is anyone surprised that the Germans would be the ones that would try to perpetuate anti-Israel UNRWA?

Praise rescinded as cowardice emerges . . .

It was a mere 10 days ago that we penned this praise:

On September 7, despite intense pressure from BDS, singer Lana Del Ray will perform in Israel. Her comment in announcing that she would come to Tel Aviv: ‘. . . I believe that music is universal and should be used to bring us together.’ Bravo Lana!”

Unfortunately, the news came yesterday that Del Ray has succumbed to BDS pressure and will not come to perform at the Meteor Festival after all. She issued this pusillanimous statement:

“It’s important to me to perform in both Palestine and Israel and treat all my fans equally. Unfortunately it hasn’t been possible to line up both visits with such short notice and therefore I’m postponing my appearance at the Meteor Festival until a time when I can schedule visits for both my fans, as well as hopefully other countries in the region.”

How quickly music becomes non-universal and tears us apart when performers kowtow to BDS.

Speaking of rats . . .

It didn’t take long for the abominable group Breaking the Silence to try to exploit the situation at Mitzpe Yair. After all, they couldn’t let the equally abominable group Taayush hog all the headlines.

You may remember how Taayush members went to Mitzpe Yair (near Mount Hevron) last week, were ordered out by IDF commanders, refused to obey, and barged into people’s homes taking pictures. A scuffle ensued when homeowners tried to throw them out, and a few “activists” came out on the short end. They subsequently issued fake press releases about how they were roughed up by “extremist Jewish settlers.”

Much the same would have happened yesterday had not the IDF acted decisively from the beginning. After Breaking the Silence Director Avner Gvaryahu and his minions arrived in the closed military zone at Mitzpe on a bus with numerous other leftist “activists’, they were met by the IDF which informed them that they were in violation of a military order and had to leave.

When they refused to do so, Gvaryahu and two others were immediately detained. You can click here to see the moment of detention itself.

Congratulations to the IDF for doing its job.

As for Breaking the Silence, they milked the situation for all it was worth, ranting this statement:

“The detention of the organization’s CEO Avner Gvaryahu . . . during an educational tour in southern Mount Hebron should worry all of Israel’s citizens who value democracy. The Hebron brigade commander has given an incentive to the settlers who behave as bullies during an acquaintance and solidarity tour following last week’s violent attack executed by settlers against the Ta’ayush NGO’s activists. This is yet another unfortunate proof that the military has become the servant of the settlers and that they are the true commanders in the field.”

Educational tour?

What really should worry Israelis who value democracy is how groups like Breaking the Silence attempt to undermine Israeli democracy everyday.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion: Swedish Version 2018*

The international Jewish conspiracy against the Palestinians according to the Swedes.

The international Jewish conspiracy against the Palestinians according to the Swedes.

The above graphic (minus the names which your humble servant has inserted) appeared in a recently published edition of Omvarlden, the online magazine of the Swedish government’s Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

The graphic appeared among 12 articles devoted to how, according to Omvarlden, NGO Monitor is at the center of the effort to stop aid to the Palestinians. The apparent impetus for the graphic and articles was a recent series of exposes that NGO Monitor has published showing how all sorts of vile NGOs operating in Israel such as Breaking the Silence, Al Haq, Hamoked, and B’Tselem receive major funding from Sweden.

As Europe drifts back ever closer in time to the 1930s, images like the one above purporting to show some kind of Jewish conspiracy are not surprising.

Disgusting, but not surprising.

Particularly insofar as Sweden is concerned. After all, the Swedish government and other private entities have supported a vast array of anti-Semitic, anti-Zionist, and anti-Israel in the past.

For example, it was only six years ago that the Swedish Arts Council, a government organization, funded a book by retired Swedish diplomat Ingmar Karlsson that portrayed Israel as a racist entity practicing apartheid.

Even Swedish sources such as the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter have reported how “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” continues to be a a hot item sold by Swedish online bookstores.

In December of last year, following the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, a synagogue in Gothenburg was firebombed by 21 masked men,  leading Svante Weyler, the head of the Swedish Committee Against Anti-Semitism to say this in an interview with the daily newspaper Aftonbladet: anti-Semitism is, indeed, quite severe and on the rise in Europe—especially in Sweden.”

Your humble servant has only one more thing to say. Hopefully, the next time Omvarlden publishes a graphic like the one above, israelstreet will be on it.
