For more about the fires that scorched the Gaza border communities yesterday see below.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

The fire situation was worse than ever yesterday with major fires in the Shukda Forest, Be’eri, Kissufim, Ganei Tal, Mefalsim, Nir Am, and Gevim.

One local official estimated that 80% of all the forests and nature reserves along the border have now been burned.

Everyday now, incendiary balloons are reaching deeper into Israel. Two days ago it was Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Malachi. Yesterday it was Kibbutz Hafetz Haim near Gadera, and Modi’in. Fortunately these “balloons” were defused by police sappers before they could cause damage.

Your humble servant wonders what would happen if neighborhoods in Tel Aviv started burning down as a result of incendiary balloons. Would the government and IDF finally do something to stop the fire terror?

Guess what UNESCO declared yesterday? . . .

In a decision that should surprise no one, the abominable UNESCO Executive Council declared that the Tomb of the Patriarchs (and Matriarchs) in Hevron and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem are Palestinian.

Of course, UNESCO can make any ruling it wants; however, Israel will not abide by its decisions and in fact withdrew from UNESCO earlier this year.

Israel’s UN Ambassador  Danny Danon commented on the decision:

“This is further evidence, for anyone who did not understand why the United States and Israel withdrew from UNESCO, that again proves that UNESCO is a body based on lies and biases, and is deliberately acting against us. The State of Israel will not be a member of an organization that is trying to rewrite history and willing to be manipulated by our enemies.”

Speaking of UN ambassadors . . .

The comments of President Trump and others that Dina Powell is apparently first in line to replace Nikki Haley as US Ambassador to the UN are disturbing in the extreme.

Dina Powell, born Dina Habib, served as deputy national security adviser in the Trump Administration until December of last year when she resigned in protest over Trump’s declaration that “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.”

Born in Cairo, Powell comes from a Coptic Christian family. Dating all the way back to the Bush Administration, Powell has been viewed as the “kingpin” of American efforts to improve ties with the Arab world. On trips to Israel with Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt before she resigned, she astonished Israeli diplomats by talking about Palestinian settlements allegedly razed by Israel back in 1948.

Two of her closest friends are Iranian-born Valerie Jarrett, and Hillary Clinton’s former top aide Huma Abedin.

Enough said.

Further Travels Deep In Bulgaria: Wonderful People

As I noted yesterday, your humble servant is currently traveling in Bulgaria. After arriving in Sofia yesterday, we set out for very rural area where my mother-in-law and her family hid from the Nazis in World War II.

Whereas I pointed out the anti-Semitic neo-Nazism evident in downtown Sofia yesterday, today I would like to briefly focus on the extraordinary way that Bulgaria protected its Jews during the War.

Last night we were feted by local villagers (not really “villagers” but members of a tiny community near in the area where Bulgaria, Serbia, and Macedonia all come together):

We are in the area marked XX.

We are in the area marked XX.

It should be pointed out that the local people that you see in the photos below know that we are all Israelis–and Jewish. Some of the older people are those who sheltered and hid Jews from the Nazis–the younger ones are their children and grandchildren. There was no trace of anti-Semitism anywhere–and we were embraced with an outpouring of love that was astonishing.

When I say rural, I mean rural. Dirt roads up and around mountains. This is the jeep we were traveling in.

A picture of the local community from the yard of a lovely couple who made breakfast for us:

The products from the garden:

Apples, cherries, onions, leeks, tomatoes, walnuts, figs, and more.

The table at dinner last night:

Many Jews owe their lives to these people and others like them. Notice the dancers in the background and the raiki (very potent alcohol) on the table.

Wonderful people!
