The News  On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in Judea and Samaria in the last 24 hours . . .

Following the murders of two Israelis at the Ariel Junction and the Giti Avisar Junction, these terror attacks have taken place:

A knife-armed Palestinian terrorist was captured at the Tomb of the Patriachs in Hevron just as he was about to carry out a stabbing attack.

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli men, women, and children with “rocks” and Molotovs near the Oranit checkpoint, Luban a-Sharqiya, the Beit Kahlil Bridge, Adam Square, and Havat Yehuda among other places.

Palestinian terrorists throwing Molotovs set an Israeli bus on fire south of Karmei Tzur.

Palestinian terrorists throwing “rocks” smashed the front windshield of a bus in Gush Etzion. The bus driver managed to drive to safety, but had to be evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital where he was hospitalized with severe cuts to his face.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Tragic and Heroic Death of  Rabbi Achiad Ettinger

Rabbi Achiad Ettinger.

Rabbi Achiad Ettinger.

In yesterday’s israelstreet blog, your humble servant discussed how soldiers hesitated to shoot at the terrorist at the Ariel Junction. We angrily lamented that IDF soldiers have become riddled with hesitation for fear they will be court-martialed by an IDF Military Advocate General Office run amok with political correctness.

But there was one person who did not hesitate to shoot.

Rabbi Achiad Ettinger, a father of twelve children who lived along with his wife Tamar in the Samarian community of Eli.

When I described him as acting “heroically” during one of the attacks, I did not elaborate. Allow me to do so now and in the process explain why “heroically” barely describes what Rabbi Ettinger did.

As he was driving his car through the Ariel Junction, the terrorist opened fire on his car. Rabbi Ettinger was hit twice, once in the head and once in the neck. Needless to say, he was bleeding profusely.

What do you think he did next?

Did he try to drive to safety? Did he try to seek help? Did he think of himself?

The answer to all three questions is “No.”

Rabbi Ettinger unbelievably turned his car around, drove back to the Junction, and opened fire on the terrorist. According to reports at the scene, he wounded the terrorist causing him to flee–and in the process Rabbi Ettinger saved untold lives.

Immediately afterwards, Rabbi Ettinger was rushed to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva where doctors worked feverishly overnight to save his life.

Tragically, however, Rabbi Ettinger died this morning and was buried in Eli this afternoon.

At the gravesite, Rabbi Ettinger was eulogized by fellow Rabbi Avraham Shiller who said this about his friend:

“Rabbi Achiad, you’re a hero and a warrior. You’re a hero and a warrior who thought about the people of Israel, you are an emissary of the Israeli nation; everyone will learn from you how to deal with terror and how heroes fall. You are a hero.”

May the memory of the heroic Rabbi Achiad Ettinger always be blessing.
