The Bizarre Quote of the Day

“The Hamas military exercise on the Gaza border is a positive sign. They understand that Israel still has a military option on the table.”

Yuval Steinitz, member of the Netanyahu’s Security Cabinet and Minister of Energy

In what strange universe can Hamas’ surprise military exercise on the Gaza border be “a positive sign”? How can Steinitz possibly think that having Hamas terrorists sharpen their skills at killing our soldiers is a good thing?

Just plain bizarre.

The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

The IDF spokesman spent much of his day yesterday tooting his horn about the decreased numbers of fires over the last 5 days. Not the elimination of such fires as was supposed to happen, merely a reduction in their number.

At the same time as this horn was blowing, Hamas was releasing a new video about a new detonator on the explosive balloons which will be used in the coming days. Be sure to watch the short video to the end.

In Judea and Samaria:

Palestinian terrorists attacked Israelis with “rocks” and Molotovs at Nabi Elias, Luban a-Sharqiya, Halhul, Al Aruv, Turmus’aya, Ras Karkar, Azmut, near Hizma, at Tekoa, and at numerous other places.

All reports of these attacks come from citizens on the ground sent to Rescue Without Borders, Rescue Judea and Samaria, hakolhayehudi, and rotter.

IDF and Border Police forces captured 12 wanted Palestinian terrorists overnight.

The murderer of Eyal, Gilad, and Naftali gets a “raise” . . .

Eyal, Gilad, and Naftali.

Eyal, Gilad, and Naftali.

It seems like only yesterday but it was back on June 12, 2014 that Naftali Frenkel (16), Gilad Shaer (16), and Eyal Yifrah (19) were kidnapped and murdered in Samaria.

A month later, one of the three terrorists who planned and executed the murders was captured, and subsequently convicted and imprisoned. Two months after his capture, Israel tracked down the other two terrorists who were fortunately killed in a firefight.

For the first five years that murderer number one was in prison, he received a monthly salary of 2000 shekels from the PLO. However, as of today, his salary will double to 4000 shekels monthly. As the years go by, that salary will triple, quadruple, and even quintuple.

And to think that the Israeli government is actively engaged in trying to bail out the PLO because it is on the verge of economic collapse.

Netanyahu on the stump in Samaria . . .

You know that the September election campaign has begun in earnest when you find PM Netanyahu out in Samaria. Last night, he was speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Samaria Regional Council.

Two snippets from his Samaria stump speech:

“The nation of Israel is at home in Samaria. Samaria is not just the nation’s birthright, but the nation’s guard tower.”

“I will not allow the uprooting of any Jewish community . . . We are done with all that foolishness . . . and will not repeat the mistakes of the past.”

Later in the evening, Netanyahu tweeted:

“It is not possible to uproot a return to the land of Israel in any political plan. Neither Jewish nor Arab settlements will be uprooted. We’re done with this nonsense.”

All of these statements are fine and good, but Jewish community members in Judea and Samaria learned long ago that Netanyahu is firmly committed to the status quo. He may not allow any Jewish community to be uprooted, but he knows that the Israel Supreme Court will. Similarly, he may be against uprooting, but he is just as firmly against construction and expansion.

Some truly excellent news . . .

As you may or may not know, Israeli teenagers who are legally excluded from the military draft are compelled (with some exemptions) to participate in “national service.”

It has long been an incomprehensible fact that this national service can be completed by working with groups which actively undermine Israel’s national existence.

Yesterday, it was announced that national service participants can no longer “serve” with the following extreme leftist organizations:  Amnesty International, Social TV, Physicians for Human Rights, the Committee Against Torture, B’Tselem,  Kav LaOved, the Hotline for Refugees and Immigrants, and Eliflet.

Fantastic news.

But, as we all know, this is not the end of the story. Some of the groups have already filed appeals with the Israeli Supreme Court.

We can all guess how it will rule.

TODAY’S BLOG:

35 Years Is What A Jewish Life Is Worth

Tuvia Yanai Weissman with his wife Yael and daughter Neta.

Tuvia Yanai Weissman with his wife Yael and daughter Neta.

It was the evening of February 18, 2016.

Tuvia Yanai Weissman, his wife Yael, and their four month old daughter Neta, were shopping at a Rami Levy Supermarket in Samaria. Tuvia, 21-years-old, was on leave from the IDF’s Nahal Brigade.

Three Palestinian terrorists armed with knives entered the supermarket and immediately began stabbing an Israeli man they encountered. Tuvia saw this and even though he was unarmed rushed to defend the man without a moment’s hesitation.

In the ensuing struggle, Tuvia was stabbed; the terrorists then ran out of the supermarket where two of them were shot and moderately wounded by a civilian who happened to be there. The third was captured a few days later.

Tuvia was rushed to Sha’are Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem where he died.

If you can believe it, it took more than two years to bring the first of the terrorists to trial. He was convicted in December and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The other two terrorists were convicted last month, and yesterday sentenced to 35 and 32 years in prison respectively despite the appearance in the military court of Tuvia’s family members and wife to plead for a life sentence.

Why weren’t they sentenced to life in prison as the military prosecutor sought?

Absurdly, because they were “minors” at the time (now they are “adults”).

Back in 2016, Yael had sobbed at Tuvia’s funeral: “If you had not raced to help, you would not be the Yanai that I know, the one I fell in love with. We were waiting for your release from the army. We had so many plans. To fly, to trek, to work, to study and most important of all, to be together.”

Yesterday, following the sentencing, Yael published this message that describes what she said to her daughter:

“It was only last week that we sat in the house, you and I, planted on the sofa. You looked at me with your blue eyes and asked if Dad really would not come back because you have missed him too long, and you’ll be four years old soon . . .

You kept asking how my father died and if it hurt, and when I told you about those bad people that Dad tried to protect us from, you asked me if one day they could reach us too. I told you no, they’re in jail. Far from us, because those who do such a terrible thing can not live by us.

But you kept insisting and asking if they would ever be there. I wanted to assure you and say yes, but I just hugged you and told you I was here forever and that was what mattered.

35 years. That’s what the judges say your beloved father’s life was worth.”
