New immigrants to Israel? . . .

According to the Jewish Agency, 11,882 immigrants made aliya to Israel between January 1 and June 30 this year–a 42% increase.

Or did they?

Most of the new immigrants (7,894) came from Russia, but it turns out that many of them are working a scam called the “Passport Rise”.

A new law passed in Israel two years ago directs the Ministry of the Interior to immediately issue new arrivals a passport–without waiting for any evidence that they have actually begun to reside here.

As a result, the Russians come here, receive an Israeli passport, and immediately return home to Russia.

The scam is similar to what happened in the 1990s when many Russian “immigrants” came to Israel, grabbed all the benefits they could, then moved on to Canada or the U.S.–where they received more benefits.

Talk talk and more useless talk:

As you may not know, this week’s government cabinet meeting was held in Eilat. Netanyahu wanted the meeting to be there because Eilat traditionally votes heavily for Likud.

More than this, tourism is suffering in the city because of the fiasco with the new Ramon airport which is located 20 minutes out of town–and the fiasco with Arkia Airlines whose main hub at Sde Dov in Tel Aviv has been permanently closed forcing domestic passengers to Eilat to fight through the always crowded Ben Gurion Airport.

In any case, here were the basic points of the meeting:

*The government will supposedly spend 500 million shekels to upgrade transport infrastructure, set up tourist centers, make the coastal strip–where the naval base is now–public.

*Netanyahu supported the idea of a casino in Eilat but it was stridently opposed by the ultra-orthodox and dropped.

*The tourism minister supported the idea of building 4 new large hotels in Eilat–even though most of the hotels are now half empty.

*Netanyahu promised that the rail passenger line to Eilat would be completed (it hasn’t started yet–and is at least 5 years down the road).

*Visitors to Eilat will continue to not have to pay the Israeli 18% VAT tax.

Talk, talk, and talk. Just useless campaign chatter. And do you want to know the photo that Israelis will remember about this cabinet meeting:

King Bibi had his own personal chair driven from Jersusalem to Eilat in a pick-up truck.

Can You Guess What It Is?

Your humble servant will give you four choices:

A. A plastic balloon discarded from an incoming ship to the port

B. A previously undiscovered sea worm

C. An underwater jellyfish

D. A transparent, headless, sea cucumber

So which one do you think it is?

Well . . .

This was a trick question. The answer is none of the above.

It is actually a swirl of eggs from a female Diamond Squid. As you can see, this remarkable blue and purple colored glowing swirl is over a meter long.

In case you have never seen one of these remarkable squids before, here’s a photo of one:

Just to think that these squid were swimming around your humble servant as he was snorkeling last week in Eilat!
