Please donate to OneIsrael!

We have begun our annual September fundraising drive to be joined on September 7 by a “OneIsrael Go Fund Me” site.

Last year, our goal was modest; we wanted to get “OneIsrael” off the ground. The first step was to purchase domain names, the second was to direct those names to a common page, and the third was to begin planning how israelstreet will gradually morph into OneIsrael.

Our ultimate goal this year is $50,000.

It is an ambitious goal but we have much work to do. The money will specifically be used to hire developers to establish OneIsrael as a non-profit, redesign this website, reach out to groups that we identify as bringing unity to Israel, and establish an educational component consisting of important links and a speakers’ bureau.

It is an exciting time, and we hope you will join us on our journey to generate more support for Israel, to bring more unity to Israel, to work against the forces that seek to divide us, and to provide information about Israel that you can find nowhere else.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in Judea and Samaria in the last 24 hours . . .

El Aruv, the Pharmacy Junction in Hevron, Junction 206, Bend 160 near Hevron, Azzun, Itamar, the Gideon Junction, the Nilli Junction, Karmei Tzur, Gitti Avishar, Halhul, Tekoa: these were a dozen of the more than 25 places where Israelis were attacked with “rocks” and Molotovs yesterday.

Netanyahu in Hevron yesterday . . .

Jews who live in Hevron and surrounding areas do not forget that it was back in 1997, during his first term as Prime Minister, that Benjamin Netanyahu signed off on the division of Hevron.

That decision was viewed as an abandonment by Hevron Jews as it left only 20% of the city under Israeli control and strictly limited the movement of those Jews to only 3% of the city. In essence, the decision ghettoized the community.

In the intervening years, Netanyahu has made various gestures to the community including getting rid of the abominable TIPH observers, authorizing Jews to reside in various buildings, and ordering a building permit for a new neighborhood to be called “Hizkiyahu” in honor of the rabbi who wrote the Sde Hemed (Talmudic encyclopedia).

Nevertheless, the fact that Netanyahu came to Hevron to speak on the 90th anniversary of the 1929 pogrom in the city was actually surprising and perhaps shows just how desperate Netanyahu is for votes as he hoped to steer a few hundred voters away from Otzma–the right-wing party that has its ideological center in Hevron.

In any case, the prime minister’s message was an excellent one–though again, it was received with a grain of salt by the locals: namely, that Hevron will forever remain in Israeli hands.

At The Point of Attack:

On The Lebanese Border, Day 2

As your humble servant noted two days ago, we headed north to the Lebanese border from our home in Ashdod immediately following the Hezbollah attack on our soldiers. We wanted to see the lay of the land for ourselves.

As we drove down the mountain into the valley around Avivim, we immediately found ourselves on the Lebanese border. Strikingly, as the road twists and turns, you find yourself within 1 meter of the border. At one point, the road runs past an IDF military post; immediately on the other side we saw this:

hezzieflag

We  had heard about this place before because Hezbollah terrorists often come right up to the edge of the military outpost to provoke IDF soldiers. The flags you see are no more than 10 meters from the IDF outpost which is out of the photo to the left, and as you see, about 10 meters from the road where I got out of the car and took the picture.

From here we traveled onward for about 5 minutes; again, the border runs right up to the road:

The green hill on the other side of this small wall is Lebanon.

The green hills on the other side of this small wall are in Lebanon. The wall is supposed to stop Hezbollah snipers from picking off Israeli motorists.

On we went until we reached the actual site of the Hezbollah attack near Avivim.

The first thing we noticed were the blackened fields caused by the fire generated by the anti-tank missiles fired by Hezbollah. On Israeli television, the fire appeared to be in Israel; actually it was in Lebanon:

What is difficult to tell from the above photo is that the IDF patrol road runs between the Border fence and the “Additional Israeli fence”. From the hill, Hezbollah terrorists had an easy shot at the IDF armored personnel carrier; the laser-guided Cornet anti-tank missile has a range of 400 meters.

As we stood there looking at the scene, we had the distinct impression that there were still snipers hidden on the hill looking at us.

But as we panned to the left, this is what we saw:

The UNIFIL base.

The UNIFIL base, right beside the point of Hezbollah attack.

If you can believe this, and why not, the Hezbollah terrorists set up shop about 500 meters from the United Nations UNIFIL base.  This is why this statement from UNIFIL spokeswoman Andrea Tanti after the attack was so absurd:

“Our mandate is between the Litani River and the Blue Line. Our mission is to ensure that there are no illegal weapons in southern Lebanon. We have no mandate to disarm Hezbollah. We strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Army in southern Lebanon and work with it in concert.”

Illegal anti-tank missiles fired at our soldiers 500 meters from the UNIFIL base–almost as if Hezbollah purposely picked a spot right under the nose of UNIFIL. As we wrote two days ago, UNIFIL seemingly works in concert with Hezbollah and even provides them cover.

We spent most of the day in the Avivim area visiting with IDF troops–but as regular readers of OneIsrael know, we never provide photos of soldiers on duty or of military bases. Suffice it to say that these brave soldiers literally live under the gun 24 hours a day–never knowing when the next sniper or missile attack is going to come.

Tomorrow, we will continue with our trip to the north, Day 3.
