Continuous Israel Election Updates!

10:00 pm Tuesday: Exit polls

The dramatic result is that there is no dramatic result—yet.

The results of this election are apparently very similar to the results of the last election. One exit poll has Netanyahu and Gantz tied, one poll has Gantz ahead by 1 seat, a third poll has Gantz up by 2 seats.

No matter which exit poll you look at, the “right block” is ahead, but once again it does not have 61 votes.

It remains to be seen what will change during the night as votes are actually counted.

Stay tuned.

9:30 pm Tuesday:

The moment of truth is at hand. Sort of. The polls close in 30 minutes. All of the major Israel networks will rush out with their predictions based on exit polling. The reason we say “sort of” is that all of those polls were inaccurate in 2015 and again in April.

What we do know is that as of 8:00 pm 4,071,398 Israelis had voted–63.7%. This is an increase of 2.4% over April. This does not bode well for the smaller parties which will need more votes to get across the 3.25% threshold.

The reports from the field are jumbled. Did people vote in various localities or not? All of the major candidates are all over social media pleading with their supporters to get out and vote because of the danger of losing.

Only time will tell who was telling the truth.

4:00 pm Tuesday:

The percentage of voters that had voted as of 2:00 pm noon was 36.5%. Reports of heavy voting in ultra-orthodox and Israeli-Arab locations. Numerous reports of voting irregularities and fraud:

*Ultra-orthodox women were denied the right to vote in Herzliya because they would not show their hair to the voting registrars.

*At one polling station in south Tel Aviv, no ballots were available for people to vote for Labor-Bridge because, according to those in charge, the Party does not have chance of winning.

*At another polling station, voters seeking to vote for Yamina were given the wrong ballots (old ones from the April election).

*At two Israeli-Arab locations (Fordis and Yarqa) voting has been suspended because of alleged forging of votes.

12:00 pm (noon) Tuesday:

*Current reports say that turnout is running 2% higher than it did in April. 15% of the voting public had voted by 10:00 am.

*There are already documented examples of voting irregularities–especially in the Israeli-Arab areas.

A voting station has been set up on the first floor; when I wheeled my father-in-law downstairs to vote, there was a remarkable scene of patients in hospital beds and wheelchairs waiting their turns to vote.

7:00 am:

All 10,885 voting stations in the country are now open and will remain open until 10 pm. 6,394,000 Israelis are eligible to vote–a key factor in the outcome of the election will be how many of them actually do. Will this be the lowest turnout ever with less than 63.5% voting (as happened in 2006) or will a large turnout surprise everyone?

In any case, the election is a tight one. Here’s the headline this morning in the Jerusalem Post:

Which candidate do you think the Jerusalem Post supports?
