The Missile Barrage On Sderot Last Night

Here in our house on the coast in Ashdod, we knew something was wrong at 9:05 pm last night when we heard helicopters heading south toward Gaza. Something was wrong because IAF helicopters and airplanes do not fly on Shabbat unless something is going on.

It did not become clear what was happening until a few minutes later when we saw reports suddenly pouring in from residents on the ground via the rotter.net online news site. What was happening was that Sderot was under attack.

Again.

Here is a photo from the first attack at 9:00 pm. It is bound to become the paradigmatic photo of what life has become in the southern Israeli communities along the Gaza border:

This should become the paradigmatic photo of life in southern Israel. Look closely, this is a mother covering her infant daughter during the missile attack last night. This is what Israel has come to.

This is a mother covering her young daughter during the missile attack last night. If you look closely you can see the little girl’s hands covering her head and her feet sticking out from beneath her mother. This is what Israel has come to.

Shortly after the initial missile attack, the mother sent out the above photo with this caption:

“My daughter! The little girl that I promised to keep safe! . . . Her whole body was shaking, she was frozen on the floor and not moving with her hands on her head .. My girl I’m so sorry you have to go through it! I will hug you every minute.”

Here was the sequence of events last night:

9:00 pm: Palestinian terrorists fired missiles at the Sderot area of southern Israel.  Alarms were sounded in Sderot, Nir Am, and Erez.

Here is a photo of one of the houses that was hit in Sderot:

The missile struck just outside the front door.

The missile struck just outside the front door.

Luckily, the family in the house–the front wall of which was shredded by shrapnel–had made it to their bomb shelter when the missile hit.

In fact, there was much shrapnel damage all over Sderot with numerous cars being hit and windshields and windows shattered.

According the IDF, 10 missiles were fired and 8 were intercepted by the Iron Dome. According to other accounts from residents, there were 13 missiles and 7 intercepts.

Whatever the case, how did our wonderful government and vaunted IDF respond to these attacks on our citizens?

The way they always do.

By doing nothing.

First, they rushed to absolve Hamas of all blame by claiming that the missile fire was from Islamic Jihad.

Second, they warned Hamas to evacuate all of its “military” buildings and outposts.

Third, the IAF bombed empty buildings and empty outposts. Specifically, they hit the same naval force training compound (empty land) again, weapon manufacturing and storage sites (empty buildings) again, and underground structures (empty sections of  tunnels) again.

Fourth, the IDF issued the same absurd statement as always that the IDF will not tolerate attacks on Israeli civilians.

It is a nauseating scene we have seen played out time and again.

It is a scene from the theater of the absurd in which our country is unwilling to protect our own citizens.
