The News on the Israeli Street

A near disaster . . .

Dozens of Israeli children would have been killed if this artillery shell had exploded yesterday.

Dozens of Israeli children would have been killed if this artillery shell had exploded yesterday.

If you can believe this, an “errant” Egyptian artillery shell struck the Bnei Netzarim Community Center in the Eshkol Region yesterday morning. The shell tore a hole through the Center as it passed through before stopping near an outer wall.

Right beside the room where the shell stopped was a kindergarten full of children. Miraculously, it did not explode.

Can you imagine what the carnage would have been if it had?

By the way, this is the second time in two months that an “errant” Egyptian artillery shell has hit Bnet Netzarim. The previous one exploded there on September 28. Fortunately, that shell hit an open area and no one was wounded or killed.

It’s not enough that the citizens of southern Israel along the Gaza border have to worry about missiles from Gaza–now they have to worry about artillery from Egypt.

Another near disaster . . .

An IDF helicopter carrying two pilots and eleven elite soldiers developed a malfunction last night. The pilots were able to crash land the helicopter, and everyone was able to get off safely before the helicopter burst into flames.

A rally for Netanyahu last night . . .

A relatively small crowd of some 10,000 vocal Netanyahu supporters showed up last night in Tel Aviv to buttress the embattled prime minister.

Interestingly, many of Likud’s leaders did not show up; however, a poll yesterday revealed that Netanyahu remains the favorite among Likudniks to lead the party into what will probably be a third election in about 100 days.

At the same time, a Channel 13 poll shown on Israeli television last night showed that if an election were held today, the results would be exactly the same as the last two.

TODAY’S BLOG:

“PM Netanyahu, what are you going to do tonight so that our children will sleep peacefully?”

As you can see from the breaking news ticker above, a barrage of missiles hit the Sderot area again last night.

Following the attacks, the IDF bombed the usual empty buildings, empty training grounds, and empty sand dunes.

Here are a few quotes of the night:

“No one seems to have the courage to face the Hamas terrorist organization once and for all.”

Tamar Idan, head of the Sdot Negev Regional Council

“We are continuing the familiar and tiring reality in which the residents of Sha’ar Hanegev are at war . . . This evening we received another reminder that there is no routine and no quiet.”

Ophir Liebstein, head of the Sha’ar Negev Regional Council

“Prime Minister Netanyahu, what are you going to do tonight so that our children will sleep peacefully?”

Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi

Idan, Liebstein, and Davidi are exactly correct. The unfortunate truth is that no child living (and no adult) in southern Israel will ever be able to have a regular routine, experience quiet, or sleep peacefully until someone finds the courage to finish off Hamas.

There is no one on the current political scene in Israel who possesses that courage.
