The News on the Israeli Street

Preliminary totals from Black Friday . . .

As you may not know, Israelis literally went crazy this past week over Black Friday. Every radio ad, every television ad, every billboard ad, and every internet ad was all directed at getting Israelis into the “buy” mood.

It doesn’t take much to do so because Israel has to be one of the most consumer-driven places on the planet. Every person has to have the latest watch, the latest fashions, the latest car, the latest computer, and especially the latest phone.

The initial data from yesterday indicates that between 9 am and 12 pm–a period of only three hours–Israelis used their credit cards 1.6 million times for purchases totaling 440,000,000 shekels. Between 11:00 am and noon alone, there were 12,500 transactions per minute.

We don’t have the data yet for the rest of the day, but your humble servant can tell you that here in Ashdod the malls were packed all the way up to the beginning of Shabbat.

It was a madhouse.

Israel on the scene again . . .

This time in Albania. The Israel Rescue and Service team from Mevo’ot HaHermon Regional Council in the north is currently in Albania.

They are focusing their rescue efforts pulling people out of the rubble in Durres where the 6.4 earthquake that struck four days ago killed several dozen people.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Strange Sequence of Events Last Night in Ashkelon

It all began at 8:51 pm last night.

Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired at least two missiles into southern Israel. One of the missiles struck “an open place” in the Eshkol Region between Be’eri and Kissufim.

Apparently there was no IDF response.

Then at 11:01 pm, incoming missile warning sirens screeched from Netiv Ha’Asara all the way to Ashkelon:

Where the alarms blared at 11:01 pm last night.

Where the alarms blared at 11:01 pm last night.

Tens of thousands of Israelis rushed to their bomb shelters. The Iron Dome missile interceptor system was activated, interceptor missiles were fired.

And then . . . the strangeness began . . .

Who knows what happened?

Residents heard explosions, but shortly thereafter, we had this bizarre statement from the IDF spokesman:

“. . . a few minutes ago, non-rocket fire from the Gaza Strip was detected at Israel. Alert system operated as required, air defense fighters launching interceptions at targets in accordance with policy and in absence of need, no actual interception.”

Say what?

Let’s break this statement down:

1. Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired “non-rocket” fire at Israel.

2. However, whatever they fired was at a sufficiently high trajectory to activate the Iron Dome system.

3. The Iron Dome system operated as it should have–launching interceptors.

4. However, the interceptor system missiles did not intercept any missiles because there was no need to intercept anything.

Have you got that?

All of which begs the question of what exactly was fired from Gaza–a question that was somewhat answered by this IDF spokesman statement that came about an hour later:

Shortly before, IDF fighter jets attacked Hamas terror targets in the northern Gaza Strip, including a military compound. The attack was carried out in response to gunfire.

“Gunfire”?

Are we supposed to believe that some terrorist sitting in Gaza shooting some high-powered rifle toward Ashkelon caused Iron-Dome interceptor missiles to be fired?

One certainly hopes not. Talk about cost-ineffective–a $50,000 dollar missile interceptor to intercept a $1 bullet?

With this morning has come a new explanation which is that the Iron Dome system was activated by anti-aircraft fire directed toward IAF aircraft.

The bottom line is that no one really knows what triggered the Iron Dome: bullets, anti-aircraft fire, or Grad missiles?

But the overall point is that whatever triggered the Iron Dome, Israeli men, women, and children of southern Israel were once again in their bomb shelters last night because of Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.

Once again exposed to missile fire from Gaza (and perhaps more), and once again traumatized in what has once again become a daily and nightly routine.

And once again, no price was paid by the terrorists in Gaza who continue to shoot at southern Israel with impunity.
