The News on the Israeli Street

The daily (Friday) Corona update . . .

As you can see from the ticker above, there are now 3035 confirmed cases of Corona in Israel. 12 people have died. Extremely worrisome is the fact that there are now 49 people listed in “difficult situation.”

As we have been reporting, the major places of outbreak have been ultra-orthodox communities, especially Jerusalem and Bnei Barak. This morning, the mayor of Bnei Barak said that more than 300 patients are hospitalized there.

PM Netanyahu declared this morning that if there is no change in the rate of infection in the next 48 hours, the entire country will be closed down.

Thus far, the Corona police in Israel have handed out 643 fines including 310 for entering a public space, 99 for refusing to disperse, 85 for being in a forbidden place, 74 for operating businesses, 67 for violating their self-quarantines, 1 for operating a taxi.

The Defense Ministry is in the process of renting 20 more “Corona” hotels to house the thousands of Israelis who will be quarantined upon returning to Israel in the next few weeks. In fact, virtually everyone arriving in Israel is now sent to a Corona hotel.

By next week, Israel is hoping to be performing 30,000 Corona tests per day. This may be wishful thinking.

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

If you had thought that the Corona virus would have put a damper on Palestinian terror, you would have been incorrect. Here are some of the places where terrorists have attacked Israelis with “rocks” and Molotovs:

Yakir, Wadi Hermiya, the south Jerusalem tunnel, Beit Hadassah in Hevron, Karmi Tzur, Al-Muayyir, the T-Junction in Gush Etzion, Givat Assaf, Nizam, Na’alin, Silwan, Neve Tzuf, near Itamar, Ofra, between Yakir and Rabba, Luban A-Sharqiya, and Tekoa.

At 9:06 pm this evening, Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired missiles into the Sderot area of southern Israel.  No Israelis were physically wounded. In response, the IDF attacked empty buildings and sand dunes, and then informed Hamas leaders that it is ready to help Hamas with the Corona virus in Gaza.

Can you believe it? Sderot is attacked yet again, and the IDF reaches out to help the perpetrators.

TODAY’S BLOG:

The Bizarre Situation Around The Gantz Decision

The repercussions of what happened yesterday are still reverberating around the Israeli political scene. The country may have been focused on Corona, but Benny Gantz’s sudden decision to align with Benjamin Netanyahu has left all Israelis shaking their heads.

Two items contributed to the sheer bizarreness of the event:

—First was the Israel Supreme Court. What it revealed itself to be yesterday was a power crazed institution intent on Benjamin Netanyahu’s destruction.

Recall the sordid sequence of events:

1. The Court took the extraordinarily unprecedented step of ordering Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein to call a new election for Knesset Speaker on Wednesday. The purpose was to replace Edelstein with someone more amenable to passing anti-Bibi laws. The decision  had no basis in any law.

2. Edelstein refused saying that the Court’s action was an egregious abuse of judicial power and submitted a letter of resignationHis resignation was due to take effect yesterday, on Friday.

3. But so desperate was the Court to get rid of Edelstein (and Netanyahu) that it couldn’t wait, and once again demanded a new Knesset Speaker by Wednesday afternoon. Through various shenanigans, Amir Peretz–the longest serving member of the Knesset–was named the new interim Speaker of the Knesset.

4. This brought about the surreal situation that there were actually 2 Knesset Speakers at one time.

5. This all eventually led to something that the Court did not expect, namely that when time came to choose a permanent Speaker, the only person who ran was Benny Gantz.

—Second was Benny Gantz himself. Again consider the sequence of events:

1. Throughout the last year and a half, Benny Gantz has done nothing but trash Netanyahu and constantly declared that he would never enter into an agreement with him.

2. In the last three weeks alone:

*Gantz entered into a detailed agreement with Avigdor Liberman and proceeded to agree to all of Liberman’s demands concerning civil marriage, municipal conversions, etc. In return, Liberman pledged his 7 seats to Gantz to do with as he wished.

*Gantz then entered into a detailed agreement with the Joint Arab List covering a wide range of issues and promising it numerous ministerial positions. He even agreed to align with ultra-terrorist Balad.

*He then used Liberman’s 7 seats and the 15 seats of the Joint Arab List to form the anti-Bibi group in the Knesset and stage a 61 seat takeover. Immediately, an Arrangements Committee was formed with a Kahol Lavan majority and then other committees were formed with Kahol Lavan majorities.

Then suddenly out of the blue, Gantz sunk Liberman and the Joint Arab List–not to mention two of the other leaders of his party, Yair Lapid and Moshe Ya’alon. He threw Kahol Lavan in the garbage.

It was just totally bizarre.

So where does all of this leave us?

Your humble servant has to wonder what PM Netanyahu promised Gantz. He apparently can have his choice of a number of plum jobs: Minister of Defense, Foreign Minister, or ?

But to top all of this bizarreness off, the word comes tonight that Gantz is only looking to serve in a national unity government coalition for 6 months. This would mean that he is willing to let Netanyahu serve as prime minister without himself (Gantz) getting a shot at prime minister.

If this is true, why didn’t Gantz step up to the plate a year ago and save us all of the elections we have been through–elections which drove a wedge in Israeli society.

It is all just unbelievable.
