The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

As of 8 am this morning (Saturday):

22,800 confirmed casesan increase of 400 since this time yesterday

16,872 recoveredan increase of 865

46 in serious conditiona decrease of 1

28 on ventilatorsa decrease of 1

314 have died–an increase of 5

There are more people being tested, and therefore there are more confirmed cases. The Health Ministry notes a huge increase in those who have recovered–so huge that your humble servant doubts the accuracy of the number (see below). Fortunately, the number of people in serious condition and on ventilators is holding steady; however, there has been an increase of 5 in the death countlargely because of 3 people who have died (aged 99, 88, 81) at the Golden Age Nursing Home in Jerusalem.

The statistics coming out of the Health Ministry have been fluctuating widely. In the morning you may see that there are 658 newly confirmed cases, by afternoon that number could be 400, by the evening…who knows? The problem is that there seems to be no “set” 24 hour reporting period. What we do here at OneIsrael is just report from 8 am to 8 am–and put other updates from the Health Ministry on the breaking news ticker above.

It seemed just a week ago that Israel and Greece were on the verge of opening up tourism with each other again. That has changed with the spike in confirmed cases here. Greece announced yesterday that it is opening its borders to citizens of all countries beginning on July 1 except for citizens from these countries: Britain, Sweden, the U.S., Russia, Israel, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Northern Macedonia.

What Happened On The Gaza Border Last Night

An explosion from an IAF attack on Gaza last night; it was probably an empty building.

An explosion from an IAF attack on Gaza last night following missiles fired at southern Israel; the explosion above probably blew up an empty building.

The sequence of events on the Gaza border last night:

At 8:59 pm, at least two missiles were launched from Gaza at southern Israel. One hit an open space near Sderot; what happened to the other one is not clear at this time–it apparently exploded nearby in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council.

The missile attack came from an Islamic Jihad launch site west of Khan Younis.

At 10:51 pm, the IAF attacked targets in Gaza. Here in Ashdod, the windows in our house rattled from the “booms.” One of the bombs knocked out all power to Khan Younis.

The IDF Spokesman said that the IAF attacked a Hamas “rocket and weapons production factory” in southern Gaza. What he didn’t say was that it is the same one that has been attacked numerous times over the years.

An hour later, just before midnight, we were awakened by F16s screaming overhead on their way to Gaza. Shortly thereafter, there were 4 blasts that occurred at 20 second intervals.

We heard intermittent booms here in Ashdod for the remainder of the night.
