The Photo of the Day:

Part of the protest circus in front of the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem yesterday.

What a cast of characters: some protesting against Netanyahu’s alleged corruption, some protesting for social workers, some protesting against sovereignty, and on and on. Perhaps the most creative protesters are the two bathing suit-clad women in the middle holding up a sign reading “Freedom” but spelling it in such a way as to make a play on the word “chof” (beach).

What you do not see in the photo is any of the hatred that characterized the protests in the same place several days ago.

The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

As of 8 am this morning (Saturday):

There are 47,459 confirmed casesan increase of 1,400 since this time yesterday

As a point of interest, Israeli media is reporting that there were 1900+ newly confirmed cases yesterday. However, that number is based on a “32 hour day” (midnight to midnight + 8 hours based on the Health Ministry’s data release times). Here at OneIsrael, we look at a 24 hour day (8 am to 8 am).

20,744 of these confirmed cases have recoveredan increase of 374

208 are in serious conditionan increase of 6

56 of the seriously ill are on ventilatorsa decrease of 2

392 have diedan increase of 8

There are 26,715 active cases.

*20 Corona hotels are now open to receive those diagnosed with the virus. 600 Israelis were sent to them yesterday–following 1800 more who went to them during the week.

*In yet another moment of chaos yesterday showing how no one is charge, the closure of restaurants to all in-restaurant dining was rescinded at the last moment and rescheduled to this coming Tuesday. This happened after restaurant and bar owners said they wouldn’t obey the closure. What will happen on Tuesday is anyone’s guess.

*786 IDF soldiers have been diagnosed with Corona; all are in “light” condition. Another 10,615 soldiers are in self-quarantine.

*Starting this week, 35,000 workers in nursing homes will be required to have 1 corona test per week. This follows more outbreaks–especially in a nursing home in Beersheva where more than a dozen residents have already died. This new measure begs the question of why has it taken more than 4 months to begin to regularly test nursing home workers? The answer again is that no one is in charge.

*The commander of Iran’s Basij forces was reportedly killed two days ago in fighting with Kurdish soldiers.

*The abominable International Court of Justice in The Hague has apparently decided to postpone a formal accusation against Israel for committing “war crimes” in Judea and Samaria by building Jewish communities there. It is believed that the postponement has come because the Court believes Israel has abandoned its idea of extending sovereignty at least partly because of the threat of being prosecuted in the Court.

*Egypt and Greece have entered into an agreement designed to thwart Turkish maritime ambitions in the Mediterranean.

The Bizarre Case of the Assassination Threat Against PM Netanyahu

Yesterday, we reported that an “activist” affiliated with the left-wing anti-Netanyahu protests posted a threat to assassinate PM Netanyahu to a WhatsAPP group page. In that post, the person said that he or she was ready to become the next Yigal Amir (the assassin of Yitzhak Rabin) and that numerous other protesters were ready to do what Amir did.

It turns out that shortly after this post was publicized, the police tracked down and arrested the man who posted the threat, a Lt. Colonel in the IDF reserves.

Yes, you read that correctly.

A Lt. Colonel in the IDF reserves.

But what happened at the arrest hearing turned the bizarre into the even more bizarre. The Police presented evidence that not only had the man posted the assassination threat but also that he had been previously convicted of making threats, committing offenses against police officers, and even having engaged in a “sexual offense.”

Following this presentation and a self-serving statement from the defendant that he really did not intend to harm PM Netanyahu, the judge made these comments when issuing his decision:  “There is no dispute that the respondent wrote in WhatsApp” that he is ready to be the next Yigal Amir and to carry out Bibi’s assassination . . . I find that there is a reasonable suspicion of an offense of threats and there are also grounds for detention.”

So what was the judge’s decision?

He released the man to “house arrest” until another hearing can be held.

Yes, you read that correctly.

He released the would-be assassin.

Unbelievably bizarre. Has the Israeli judicial system gone completely mad?

Now perhaps you can get a sense of why PM Netanyahu has been complaining for months that no one is taking threats against him and his family seriously.
