What are you looking at?

What are you looking at?

The contrast last night could not have been clearer.

In the first photo, the Kotel Plaza (in front of the Western Wall) which would normally have been swamped with the ultra-orthodox engaged in prayer on the night before Yom Kippur was virtually empty as the haredis obeyed the Corona restrictions.

In the second photo, the leftists–who could care less about Corona restrictions–were out in force again on Balfour Street in Jerusalem waving their anti-Netanyahu signs and chanting their anti-Netanyahu chants.

There are now 69,563 active Corona cases in Israel.

There is no end in sight for the Corona plague. The sidewalks of Israel remain choked with people out for strolls, walks, and exercise. While your humble servant and his wife were walking here in Ashdod yesterday evening we made the following count:

273 people encountered

12 wearing masks

Israelis simply will not obey the Health Ministry guidelines. In our neighborhood of Tet Vav–the same area in which we were walking last night–more than 100 people have now tested positive for Corona. By the way, my wife and I did not walk beside all the people, preferring to walk in the dunes beside the promenade.

Speaking of not obeying the rules . . .

At the Knesset yesterday. 52 motorcycle helmets representing 52 motorcyclists.

At the Knesset yesterday. 52 motorcycle helmets representing 52 motorcyclists.

We have often written about the carnage on Israel’s highways–most often precipitated by drivers recklessly speeding, texting while driving, and not following traffic laws in general.

Some of the worst offenders are motorcycle riders who regularly go between two cars while the cars and themselves are traveling at excessive speeds.

Yesterday, a Knesset hearing revealed that 52 motorcyclists have already been killed this year and numerous others have had limbs amputated.

The committee discussion was supposed to discuss problems with infrastructure, rider training, advocacy and enforcement.

Bizarrely, the committee focused on the first item declaring that the guard rails on the side of the road are not safe enough for when motorcyclists crash into them, and that the roads need to have a stickier surface to stop motorcyclists from sliding after they hit the pavement following a crash.

Incredible.

In all of my nearly 40 years of driving here in Israel, I have never seen 1 motorcyclist pulled over by a policeman for reckless driving.

On this unhappy note, we end today’s blog to resume on Monday.

TO HELP US SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT ISRAEL

Thank you for making OneIsrael such a success! In the last three years, we have been visited more than 11.5 million times and will easily pass 12 million in a few more months.

We are getting the word out, but we can do more. We would like to develop a dynamic OneIsrael podcast that will help us reach young people who use social media. We would like to continue to call out those who seek to delegitimize Israel–both inside this country and abroad. Your participation will help us change the world!

We need your help. Your donation makes all the difference!
