UPDATE 11:00 PM Israel Time

More than 300 missiles have been fired at southern Israel today alone. The total number of missiles fired in the last 11 days now stands at more than 5000–though officials are only reporting around 4000.

At this moment the Egyptians are supposed to be monitoring what is happening in Gaza to make sure that no more missiles will be fired leading up to the ceasefire. And at the moment, missiles continued to be fired out of Gaza at a dizzying pace striking Yad Mordechai, Netiv Ha’Asara, and other communities.

We all expect a huge launching of missiles in the coming hours and even after 2 am.

UPDATE 10:00 pm Israel Time

The Israeli Security Cabinet has just agreed to a “ceasefire” (quiet for quiet) beginning at 2 am this morning. The reason we put “ceasefire” in quotation marks is that we have no idea what the Cabinet actually agreed to.

What we do know is that this war is ending the same way that previous wars with Hamas (and Hezbollah) ended. The terrorists are still firing missiles at Israelis at will and still have vast missile repositories.

And Israeli politicians are still blathering the same nonsense they always do: “Hamas will not dare start another war”; “We have reduced Hamas capabilities to the point that they are impotent”; “The people in the South now have security”; “We accomplished all of our goals in this operation.”

Crap, crap, crap, and more crap. Who is kidding whom?

We all know that the drizzle of missile fire will continue.

We all know that lowly Hamas has once again demonstrated that it can stand up to the vaunted IDF.

We all know that the people in the South are nothing but missile fodder to the politicians in Jerusalem.

And we all know that because Hamas is still standing, the IDF could not have possibly accomplished all of its goals.

Oh . . . and one more big thing:

Israel has shown yet again that it has absolutely no deterrent against terror.

UPDATE 6:30 pm Israel Time

There are numerous reports at this hour that Israel has informed Egypt–the mediator between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas–that the IDF has ceased or will shortly cease operations in Gaza.

Complete cessation will apparently take place at 1 pm tomorrow (Friday).

This cessation of operations will likely be the central point of discussion at the Security Cabinet meeting in 30 minutes.

UPDATES 6 pm Israel Time

So much for quiet. Since 6 am this morning, there has been wave after wave of missiles from Gaza centered in recent hours on Ashkelon, Beersheva, and your humble servant’s home city of Ashdod.

At this very moment, the area around Sderot is being pummeled.

A disaster was narrowly averted a few hours ago when a minibus which had been carrying 30 soldiers was hit by an anti-tank missile–just after the soldiers had gotten off. The driver was wounded, but the soldiers were not.

The IAF has continued striking in Gaza focusing on the Hamas tunnel system. IAF missile strikes continue to target terrorists in vehicles across the Palestinian state:

The security cabinet is meeting in one hour. It appears that there will not be a “ceasefire” per se; instead, there will be a “quiet for quiet” meaning that should Hamas shoot a missile, we will retaliate. In other words, we would be back to square one.

One reason there will be no ceasefire is that Hamas is making outrageous demands. Two of the main ones are that Israel turn over complete control of the Temple Mount, and that Jews no longer be allowed to live in Sheikh Jarrar.

Another reason is that Israel is apparently making the dramatic proposal that control over Gaza be turned over to international entities and that Hamas and Islamic Jihad not be allowed to rearm.

UPDATES 6 am Israel Time

This was supposed to have been a night of heavy missile fire from Gaza and a blitzkrieg from the Israeli Air Force on targets in Gaza. Neither seems to have happened. The last missile fire was at 1:02 am at Yad Mordechai.

If you don’t watch anything else today, watch this insane 45 second video produced by Gil David of Data Science Storytelling. It chronicles where incoming missile alarms have sounded in the last 10 days (the red circles are each point where missiles have exploded or been intercepted; the flashing yellow circles are the alarms. Be sure to watch the ticker at the top that specifies the day/time and the number of rocket alerts on that particular day.

Stay tuned for more details as they develop.
