Quote of the Day

“With the best intelligence services and best air force in the world, Netanyahu managed to rescue Hamas by agreeing to an embarrassing ceasefire.”

Gideon Sa’ar, Head of the New Hope Party

Embarrassing barely describes it. What Netanyahu agreed to yesterday is dangerous because as we noted yesterday, Hamas easily survived and is ready to start firing missiles again at the drop of a hat.

Not only was the desultory end of the war embarrassing to the IDF, it was also embarrassing to the IDF. In the two hours leading up to the ceasefire last night, Hamas and Islamic Jihad continued to fire missiles at the communities along the Gaza border. By all accounts, the IDF had prepared 200 airplanes for a final attack on the terrorists.

But the IDF did nothing. Just as happened in the days before the war, the IDF did not respond.

Why? According to IDF spokesman Brigadier General Hedi Zilberman, there was no response because the missile fire was not aimed at Tel Aviv.

Once again, the IDF and Netanyahu government threw southern Israel under the bus. Everyone knows that southern Israelis are nothing more than missile fodder for the politicians in Jerusalem–and for the IDF General Command.

TODAY’S BLOG

A Brief Summary of the 12 Day Israel-Gaza War

Offcially (depending on the source), between 4,350 and 4,600 missiles were fired at Israel during the 12 days. Unofficially, and more accurately, around 5100 missiles were fired, and this does not include 680 missiles launched from Gaza that landed in Gaza. The Iron Dome was 90% effective.

As a result of the rocket fire from Gaza, 12 people were killed in Israel:

1. Nella Gurevitz, 52 Ashkelon

2. Tahomiya Santosh, 32 Ashkelon (citizen of India working as a caretaker)

3. Leah Yom Tov, 63 Rishon Lezion

4. Khalil Awad, 52 Dahmash

5. Nadine Awad, 16 Dahmash

6. Sgt. Omer Tabib, 21, Elkana (killed by anti-tank missile)

7. Ido Avigal, 5, Sderot

8. Miriam Aryeh, 87, Moshav Shtulim

According to the Health Ministry (not MADA), 2496 Israelis were wounded. As of this morning, 171 are in moderate condition; 61 remain in “severe” condition.

Not mentioned in these numbers is the undisputed fact that tens of thousands of Israelisespecially children in the southare now suffering from PTSD which will affect them for the rest of their lives.

The Israel Compensation Fund reports this morning that 3,424 buildings were damaged. Ashkelon suffered the most damage with 792 buildings and 267 vehicles either damaged or destroyed. In Ashdod, 228 buildings and 130 vehicles were damaged, and in Sderot, 40 vehicles and 77 buildings were hit.

Let’s move on to what the IDF supposedly “accomplished” in Gaza.

Here is the IDF summary this morning (with my comments in parentheses):

*100 km of tunnels were destroyed (probably not really destroyed).

*25 senior officials in Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed (but none of the highest echelon).

*About 200 lower level terrorists were killed (these are easily replaced).

*About 410 launchers were destroyed along with 35 mortar firing weapons (obviously the terrorists have many more).

*5 banks were destroyed (can be easily set up again elsewhere).

*9 high-rise buildings used as a terrorist infrastructure were destroyed (made for great video and photos, but . . .)

*Raids on Israeli communities were thwarted. Dozens of offensive tunnels were destroyed.

This latter point may have been the most significant accomplishment. Click here to see a video taken this morning of Hamas digging dead bodies out of the tunnels which were meant to be offensive tunnels from which terrorists could murder Israelis in communities near the border. As of this hour, 24 bodies have been removed.

Finally, it remains to be seen what Israel has really agreed to. Will Jews be permitted back on the Temple Mount? Will Jews be permitted to live in Shimon HaTzaddik (aka Sheikh Jarrah)?

Israeli police are still on the Temple Mount, but have been cowed into inaction. Click on this video taken today of a policeman being knocked down today and not responding.

Perhaps more importantly, what disastrous effect will this latest war have on the Israeli national psyche now that we have discovered again that we have no deterrent against terror and all of us are vulnerable to attack whenever the terrorists feel like launching one.

And what a disastrous effect this war has had on the relationship between Israeli-Jews and Israeli-Arabs. Here is a video of Israeli-Arabs celebrating the “Hamas victory” last night.

Enough said for now. Such is the situation in Israel today.
