The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Palestinian terrorists threw Molotovs, “rocks”, and other projectiles at Israelis at Beit Haggai, Adorim, Negohot, Al-Aruv, Luban A-Sharqiya, and at numerous other locations.

Overnight, the IDF arrested numerous Hamas members in Judea and Samaria, centered in Tulkarm, Ya’aved, Rima, Beit Fajjar, Kifal Hares, and Silwad. Apparently, some Hamas members were eliminated in an IDF raid on Ya’abad.

The Iranian navy suffers another blow . . .

The Kharg--in better days.

The Kharg–in better days.

In case you missed the news, the largest ship in the Iranian Navy, the Kharg, exploded, caught fire, and sunk at 2:25 am this morning near the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman.

This photo, taken by a sailor on board and widely distributed by the official Iranian news agency Fars, appears to show where the explosion occurred. Note one of the sailors wearing a life vest.

Unfortunately, Yitzhak “Boogie” Herzog has just been elected President of Israel for the next 7 years. The final vote was 87 Herzog to 26 for Miriam Peretz. 7 Knesset members did not vote.

Peretz never really had a chance.

She was criticized for being a woman (none of the 16 ultra-orthodox voted for her because of that), and she was criticized for being too conservative (none of the left-wing or Israeli-Arabs voted for her. There were also traces of Ashkenazi bias against the Sephardic Peretz–with a video being circulated yesterday that suggested she did not have the necessary education (despite being a teacher) to be president.

So now we have leftist Herzog ensconced in the largely ceremonial post of president–and you can be sure that Herzog will do what he can to push a leftist agenda.

Moving on . . .

What was supposed to happen last night did not. Yair Lapid was not able to go to President Rivlin to report that he had formed a coalition government.

It appears that the main sticking point has become an even greater obstacle. Merav Michaeli, the head of the Labor Party, is adamantly refusing to relinquish the seat she was to get on the Judicial Selection Committee to Ayelet Shaked of Yamina.

The issue has reached a point today that it could actually become a coalition breaker.

Simply put, Shaked–the former Justice Minister of Israel who spent three years making the Israeli judiciary more conservative–is determined that ultra-liberal Michaeli will not be able to reverse the changes that Shaked made.

Tensions are running extraordinarily high. Shaked has been given extra security amidst threats from both sides. The anti-Netanyahu group feels that her sole purpose is to sabotage the Bennett-Lapid coalition. The pro-Netanyahu group feels that her Yamina Party has sold out its right-wing ideological beliefs.

Your humble servant has to think that somehow a compromise will be reached–but at the moment that is beginning to seem slightly more remote.

The situation can change in an instant. Stay tuned for further details.
