TODAY’S BLOG

60-59: The Deed is Done

It was around 8:45 tonight when the deed was finally done. After 12 years of nonstop attempts to delegitimize and get rid of PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his family by everyone on the “left” and their cohorts in the media, the Knesset voted in a new government by a solitary vote: 60-59.

Throughout the afternoon, the Knesset had been a circus with incoming PM Naftali Bennett speaking first. Or rather, trying to speak. Bennett could hardly get a word out of his mouth without being heckled and jeered. Insults were hurled at him like Molotovs: “traitor”, ‘liar”, “betrayer” to use a few of the more mentionable ones.

All this while Bennett was praising Netanyahu and his family–or at least pretending like he was.

This was followed by Netanyahu who arose with fiery oratory to condemn Bennett with every insult he could think of and promising that he was going nowhere and would soon be back in charge.

Interestingly, one of Netanyahu’s main charges against Bennett and his Yamina Party was that they are “fake rightists.”

Really?

Let’s take a look once again at just who is coming into power from the Yamina Party which is further to the right than Netanyahu ever has been:

Prime Minister: Naftali Bennett

Minister of the Interior: Ayelet Shaked

Minister of Religious Affairs: Matan Kahana

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office: Avir Kara

Chairman of the Health Committee and Chairman of the Coalition: Edith Silman

Chairman of the faction and Chairman of the Knesset Committee: Nir Orbach

To top it off, the settlement portfolio will initially remain in the hands of Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett.

To really top this off, just think of the other right wingers taking over:

Minister of Justice: Gideon Sa’ar

Minister of Finance: Avigdor Lieberman

Minister of Education: Yifat Biton

Minister of Jerusalem (or another ministry): Ze’ev Elkin

Yes, the leftists in the public and in the media may be out celebrating in the streets tonight, but tomorrow they may find themselves in a distinctly different reality than they imagined.

As the old saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for . . .”
