Questionable Quote of the Day

“If the Coalition government does something ideologically serious in my eyes, we (Yamina) will not be part of it. If the American government asks for a freeze in Judea and Samaria, there will be no Coalition government.”

Ayelet Shaked, Israel Interior Minister

We at OneIsrael have always been a fan of Ayelet Shaked both for the outstanding work she did as Justice Minister and for her principled stand on issues.

However, these remarks are questionable at best.

First, what is ideologically serious? Wasn’t it ideologically serious three days ago when PM Bennett (also from Yamina), said that Jews have no right to worship on the Temple Mount?

More than this, the virtual freeze that Netanyahu clamped on construction in Judea and Samaria for 12 years has not been lifted by the Bennett-Lapid government and is not likely to be–if for no other reason than our so-called “Defense” Minister Benny Gantz has final say. If you can believe this, Gantz even postponed “wheelchair access” construction at the Cave of the Patriarchs yesterday for fear of Muslim reaction.

So, to borrow a line from Shakespeare, Shaked’s statement is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

PM Bennett’s dramatic statement last night:

“Vaccine refusers are hurting all of us, including their families and their relatives. The Cabinet today made a decision that as of August 8 a vaccine refuser will not be able to enter a cinema, theater, synagogue, amusement park, football game and any activity over 100 people, indoors or outdoors, unless he brings a negative corona test, at his own expense.”

The numbers: 1251 Israelis were newly confirmed with the virus yesterday; 75 are seriously ill, 12 are on ventilators.

Of the 12 who are on ventilators: 8 of them were not vaccinated, 3 of them had been vaccinated, and 1 was in the process of being vaccinated.

By the way, more than 90% of Israeli adults aged 60 and over are vaccinated.

About the fear that the younger generation might be particularly susceptible to myocarditis, only 2 cases of mild myocarditis have been reported among the 56,254 children aged 12-15 who have received both doses of vaccine and 178,836 who have received one dose.

Fascinating Health Ministry facts just released concerning six months ago:

*1,848,568 Israelis had been fully vaccinated as of February 1.

Let The Games Begin!

As you probably know, Israel is stark raving sports crazy. Israelis rabidly follow the local soccer and basketball leagues, and team scarves and decals adorn buses and cars.

Israel especially lives and “dies”  with each piece of news about Israelis who play abroad. When Eran Zahavi scored 3 goals for his PSV Eindhoven Dutch team in a soccer game this week, it was major news. When Omri Casspi announced his retirement from basketball, it was even greater news.

Now the Olympics are upon us, and while there will be no one in the stands in Japan cheering on athletes, Israelis will be glued to their television sets nervously watching the performance of each and every Israeli athlete. Even the local television satellite and cable channels are offering complimentary channels to watch the events.

An unusual Israeli entry this year is in the baseball competition in which the Israeli baseball team–which is made up primarily by immigrants from the U.S.–has gained a place in the qualifying round.

Another sport that Israeli has traditionally done well in is judo.

As soon as the first matches in the judo competition were scheduled at the Olympics yesterday and before the games have even started, Israeli judoka Tohar Bobul chalked up the first Israeli victory–of sorts.

His first round opponent, Algerian Fathi Nurin resigned when he learned that he would face an Israeli in the first round.

Your humble servant doubts that the resignation bothered Bobul very much–it just allows him to be fresher for his next match.

We at OneIsrael wish the Israeli team good luck!

Shabbat Shalom from Israel
