The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

5,755 more Israelis tested positive for Corona yesterday out of 127,000 who were tested; the positive test rate was 4.59%.

38,942 Israelis now have active cases of Corona. The IDF reports that 865 soldiers have now been diagnosed with Corona.

400 patients are in serious condition; another 62 are critically ill on ventilators.

Startlingly, 26 more Israelis died yesterday bringing to 6,585 the total number of deaths since the virus arrived here.

A personal anecdote . . .

Last night, your humble servant and his wife went out to eat at a local restaurant which is right beside the Ashdod marina.

The restaurant was packed; people were waiting in line for up to 45 minutes to get a seat at a table either inside or outside.

No one in the restaurant except for the waiters and waitresses was wearing a mask (except for us) probably because virtually everyone there had been vaccinated. You would have never known that Corona is even present in Israel much less that it is rapidly increasing.

Obviously, one reason for the increase is that Israelis seem to be oblivious or indifferent to the fact that they still need to wear a mask because they can easily get a Corona mutation even if they have been vaccinated.

About those vaccinations . . .

Of course, Israelis are only receiving the Pfizer vaccine–and are being pushed to receive a 3rd dose in order to ward off mutations such the Delta variant.

However, these are the findings posted on August 8 from the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. (emphasis mine):

“Overall, we find that in our study population from Minnesota, both vaccines strongly reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19, but individuals vaccinated with mRNA-1273 (Moderna vaccine) were about half as likely to experience breakthrough infections as individuals vaccinated with BNT162b2 (Pfizer vaccine). This relative risk reduction conferred by mRNA-1273 was also observed in other states, including in Florida during a recent COVID-19 outbreak.”

So, taking Pfizer is highly beneficial–but in terms of fighting off variants, Moderna seems the way to go.

The news from our Iranian neighbors . . .

The British have revealed that the missiles that hit the Mercer Street tanker were fired by Iranian proxy Houthis in Yemen.

Numerous explosions took place at the Revolutionary Guard stronghold on Kharg Island overnight. The fires were still burning this morning:

Note the smoke billowing from the two facilities.

An Iranian ship in the Syrian port of Latakia blew up this morning:

Authorities are mystified as to what caused the explosion.

Finally, Corona seems to have hit the Islamic Republic hard. According to the official news media, one Iranian is dying of the virus every two minutes.

The Destruction At Chumash This Morning: A National Shame

Shuli Har-Melekh.

Shuli Har-Melikh.

On August 29, 2003, 25-year-old Shalom (Shuli) Har-Melikh was driving northeast of Ramallah when PLO terrorists opened fire on his car. He was killed and his wife Limor was seriously wounded. Seven months pregnant, she was rushed to a Jerusalem hospital where miraculously she gave birth by Caesarean section to a healthy baby girl.

By all accounts, Shuli was remarkable: while studying at the Homesh yeshiva, he taught at the Kedumim School and worked as volunteer ambulance driver for Hatzola rescue organization of Judea and Samaria. At the time of his death, a friend remarked: “He was a wonderful man, warm and helpful.”

Two days ago, a Torah scroll dedicated to Shuli’s memory was brought to the yeshiva at Chumash which is located on the northern Samarian site where Jews were forced to leave in 2005 at the same time as the Gush Katif communities of northern Gaza were “evacuated.”

It was a bittersweet moment yesterday as those in attendance recalled Shuli’s life.

Today it just turned bitter when Border Guards and personnel from the Civil Administration descended on Chumash and destroyed the yeshiva.

Two scenes from Chumash yesterday.

In the top photo, yeshiva students are forced to set up study tables away from where their yeshiva was destroyed. Note the Border Guards in the background.

In the second photo is a yeshiva student who was beaten during the “evacuation.” He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

As is often the case in Judea and Samaria, Knesset member Itamar Ben Gvir summed it up best:

“Why was it urgent for Border Guards and the Civil Administration to demolish the yeshiva? The Arabs in the area who steal electricity are now being connected to the national electricity grid for the common good; the illegal Bedouin construction all over the Negev is whitewashed for the common good; Khan Al-Ahmar still stands despite Court orders because of the common good; but Jews continue to be brutally evicted and their yeshivas and residences destroyed. Is this for the common good? No. Jews attacking Jews is a national shame.
