The Quotation of the Day

(An Old One Worth Remembering)

“The State of Israel is not a banana republic.”

Former PM Menachem Begin responding to criticism from U.S. President Reagan about Israeli law being extended to the Golan Heights.

How did we ever get to the point of acting like a banana republic vis a vis the United States? Since when does every decision we make have to be “cleared by” or “done in consultation” with the U.S.?

Your humble mentions this because of the angry phone call that “Defense Minister” Benny Gantz received from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinkin two days ago during which Blinken excoriated Israel for proceeding with new construction in Judea and Samaria and for designating 6 Palestinian organization as “terrorist.” He was particularly angry that Israel had not coordinated these decisions with the Biden Administration.

During that phone call, Gantz attempted to appease the infuriated Blinkin by promising him that Israel would make more concessions to the Palestinians to compensate for these decisions.

Where is Menachem Begin when we need him?

The News on the Israeli Street

500,000,000 shekels . . .

That is the amount of money that the PLO owes to the Israel Electric Corporation and Jerusalem District Electricity Company–a debt that has been steadily increasing over the last two years.

As a result, Israel has informed the PLO that beginning next week, electricity will be turned off in Ramallah and Bethlehem for 4 hours a day.

As we have noted in the past, the whole situation is a farce. The PLO, Palestinian infantile freeloaders that they are, knows that it will never have to pay for their use of electricity because some European donor country will come to the rescue of the “poor Palestinians”.

The daily Corona update . . .

727 more Israelis were confirmed “yesterday” as having Covid-19. There are now 10,275 active cases in the country.

1,325,496 Israelis have contracted Corona since the pandemic began.

The positive test rate yesterday was 0.85%.

234 Israelis are in serious condition with another 139 in critical condition on ventilators.

8,073 Israelis have died–10 since yesterday.

Vaccinations:

6,225,127 Israelis have received one dose.

5,720,734 Israelis have received two doses.

3,924,715 Israelis have received three doses.

It is fair to say that the vaccination push has stalled with only incremental increases everyday.

This is largely a factor of mixed messages coming from the government as well as a major controversy of whether to vaccinate kids from 5-11 years of age. Apparently that vaccination process for kids will begin on November 1, but there is a considerable backlash among Israeli parents which has pervaded all segments of the population.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Brazen Gall

It was a mere day ago . . .

. . . that your humble servant characterized as “nauseating” that the Civil Administration had canceled a meeting to advance the proposed 1,335 new housing units in Judea and Samaria because the Biden Administration has condemned the new construction.

I noted that the meeting could take place “tomorrow, next week, or never,” and as it turned out, it took place yesterday.

However, this is not the end of the story.

Just because plans for new residents are approved and bids are tendered, it does not mean that residence units will actually be built. There are numerous points in the process at which the process can be frozen again.

We will keep our eyes open to find out if that happens, but for now, a step has been taken in the right directionno pun intended.

By the way, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden all called today for the Israeli government to “withdraw” the approval of the housing units “to improve cooperation and reduce tensions.”

Can you even believe the brazen gall of these countries?

As a group, they have sliced up Area C of Judea and Samaria, an area of sovereign Israel, and are spending vast sums of money to build illegal residence units, roads, businesses, and other infrastructure for Palestinians there. The Germans alone have pledged 200 million Euros in the last three months.

And they have the nerve to tell us that we cannot build residence units for our Jewish communities in our own land.

Just unbelievable.
