***What are you doing for New Years’ Day?

Relaxing with family and friends, taking a walk in the park, watching sports on TV, or engaging in one of many other activities?

Israelis have ushered in 2016 the same way that they ushered out 2015–by trying to stay alive in the face of Palestinian terrorism.

In the last three hours we have had two major terror attacks. In the first, a Palestinian tried to run over soldiers near the Yatir Forest beside Hebron. The soldiers were able to avoid serious wounds, but the terrorist escaped.

A few minutes later, a terrorist opened fire at a pub on Dizengoff Street.

Two Israelis were killed, 4 were critically wounded, and 3 more were lightly wounded. The terrorist escaped, and there is currently a widespread manhunt underway in central Tel Aviv.

The aftermath.

The aftermath.

***It was January 2013.

Samir Awad illegally crossed the separation fence near the Palestinian settlement of Budrus. An IDF group was stationed at that point in the fence because local Palestinians had been knocking holes in the structure to permit terrorist infiltrators to get into Israel.

The IDF group spotted Awad, and ordered him to stop.

He refused.

The IDF fired warning shots over his head. He kept running. Two soldiers fired shots at his legs. A number of shots hit Awad, and he fell down. He died shortly thereafter.

Because his body was on the Palestinian side of the fence, the PLO took charge. The family subsequently refused to turn over his body to determine his exact cause of death (for example, did he bleed to death from a severed artery in one of his legs, or hitting his head on a rock, or something else).

Immediately B’Tselem made Awad’s death a cause celebre and demanded murder charges against the two soldiers. The IDF refused to take action saying that without an autopsy, cause of death could not be determined.

In 2014, both soldiers finished their service in the IDF, but B’Tselem continued to pressure the IDF to indict the former soldiers.

Finally, yesterday, three years after the incident, the IDF announced that it is indicting the soldiers on a charge of operational negligence.

Why you may ask, is the IDF prosecutor taking this step now?

Because it turns out, that Israel is currently in the process of presenting its “investigative procedures” to the International Criminal Court, and the ICC has let it be known that this particular case is apparently a thorn in Israel’s side.

In other words, two IDF soldiers are sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.
