–>Israel is condemned by the U.S., Europeans, and U.N., again.

As we reported here on israelstreet a couple of weeks ago, Israel has announced its intention to declare an utterly barren section of desert near the Dead Sea “state land.”

The land in question: note a portion of the Dead Sea in the upper right of the photo, and a small Jewish community to the left (photo: International Business Times).

The area, which is wholly in Area C–the area of Judea and Samaria which was designated by the Oslo Accords as being under Israeli administrative and military control–comprises 2342 dunams (580 acres). There is not, and never has been, any claim of private Palestinian ownership of the land.

Yet the above facts did not stop political blustering on a grand scale yesterday.

As usual, spokesman John Kirby of the U.S. State Department led the castigation parade:

“We’re concerned about this reported expropriation of [580 acres] in the West Bank as state land . . . This decision is, in our view, the latest step in what appears to be an ongoing process of land expropriations, settlement expansions, and legalizations of outposts that is fundamentally undermining the prospects for a two-state solution. As we have said before, we strongly oppose any steps that accelerate settlement expansion, which raise serious questions about Israel’s long-term intentions.”

He was quickly followed by the French:

“Settlements constitute a violation of international law and contradict commitments made by Israeli authorities in favour of a two-state solution.”

And the Germans:

“This decision sends a wrong signal at the wrong time. Especially in the current tense situation, both parties in the Middle East conflict are called on to take steps for a de-escalation and to find ways that lead to an urgently needed resumption of peace negotiations.”

In all of the above ranting about “settlements” and “peace process”, one could easily forget that this is Israeli land under Israeli control.

–>Where else but in Israel would you have a “Ritual Baths Law”?

Also as reported last week, the ultra-orthodox in Israel have threatened to leave the Netanyahu coalition unless action is taken immediately on management of the Kotel (Western Wall) plaza, and control of the country’s ritual baths (mikvot).

In the latter regard, a new Ritual Baths Law passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset yesterday. It would put control of the ultra-orthodox Mikvot into the hands of the ultra-orthodox, and effectively exclude Reform and Conservative Jews (whom the ultra-orthodox do not consider “Jews”).

Whether the new law will be passed or not is debatable, and whether such a law will pass Israel Supreme Court scrutiny is problematical.

–>New numbers on Israeli debt . . .

The Bank of Israel revealed yesterday that the total debt in Israel at the end of 2015 was two trillion shekels (about 513 billion dollars). Of this:

809 billion shekels are business debts in the country

742 billion shekels are government debts

475 billion shekels are individual debts (credit cards, mortgages, etc).

All in all, as a percentage (about 67%) of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, Israel is not doing too badly–and, in fact, is faring better than most countries of the OECD.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Humanitarianism towards Palestinians leads to murder, again.

Let me begin this blog today, by quoting myself from a blog I wrote on December 19, 2012. That blog was written in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in which Muhammad Maraji blew up an Israeli bus.

———-

“In all of the international and Palestinian rant about Palestinian “refugees” having a “right” to return to Israel, very few people know that some 400,000 so-called “Palestinian refugees” from all over the world have already “returned” to live in Israel.

How you may ask is this possible? Through Israel’s Family Reunification Law–a Law that was implemented years ago, largely under pressure from international so-called “human rights” NGOs and Western governments.

Basically, the Law permits Palestinian spouses and children (from anywhere . . . Ramallah to London) to reunite with their Israeli-Arab husbands or wives . . . in Israel. For example, many of the Israeli-Arab men who reunified in the past had actually married multiple Palestinian wives and fathered numerous children. Under the Law, all of their wives and children (classified as “refugees” by UNRWA) became Israeli citizens.

For years, thousands of such Palestinians streamed into the country–especially in the aftermath of the Oslo Accords when 137,000 Palestinians showed up on Israel’s doorstep, were welcomed with open arms by Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, and were granted Israeli citizenship.

However, it soon became clear that something was horribly wrong. The newly naturalized Israeli citizens were committing acts of terrorism on a grand scale. So much so that by 2003 the Law was amended by Emergency Order to temporarily ban such reunification from taking place.

In January of 2007, when the Emergency Order came up for review, a Shin Bet representative testified before the Knesset Interior Committee that 38 of the 272 suicide bombers that had struck in Israel during the previous 10 years had been newly naturalized Israeli citizens under the Family Reunification Law. On the basis of this security threat, Shin Bet recommended extending the Order for two years.

The decision about what to do was in the hands of the then-Justice Minister Tzipi Livni. Completely ignoring the Shin Bet testimony, she decreed that the Order would only be extended by two months “in order to send a message to the Palestinians that Israel wanted to renew peace talks.”

Subsequently, when Livni lost her position as Justice Minister, her decree was reversed, and the Order was extended.

All of which brings us to the case of the “Israeli” terrorist who detonated the bomb on Tel Aviv bus No. 142 on November 21st–the last day of the hostilities between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in Gaza.

It turns out that 18-year-old Muhammad Maraji was one of those 137,000 Palestinians who came to Israel as part of the Family Reunification Law in the aftermath of Oslo–arriving in the country as a three year old in 1995. He grew up in the Galilee city of Tayibe as an Israeli citizen and attended Israeli schools.

Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled in Bir Zeit University in Ramallah and while grocery shopping back in October (before the fighting with Hamas even broke out) announced to the Ramallah store owner that he wanted to fight with Hamas. It was from the store owner that Maraji obtained the bomb that he subsequently put onto the Tel Aviv bus and remotely detonated after getting off.

After blowing the bus up, Maraji calmly climbed onto another bus and proceeded to his job in the Israeli town of Modi’in–working at the local McDonalds.”

———-

So why have we quoted the above today?

The Israel Securities Authority (ISA) reported yesterday that a number of attacks in Jerusalem last week (on Saladin Street in Jerusalem, as well as those in Ramot, Pisgat Ze’ev, and IDF Square) were carried out by Palestinians who are in Israel by virtue of the “family reunification” law.

More specifically, they are “blue card” holders. Residents of eastern Jerusalem who do not want to become Israeli citizens become Israeli residents instead. They are issued a blue card with enables them to enjoy many of the benefits of citizenry, including having members of their family who live outside eastern Jerusalem join them in the city (family reunification).

Once inside Jerusalem, the new Israeli residents are issued a blue card. Unfortunately, one of the benefits of the blue card is a greater freedom of travel–a freedom that terrorists use to their advantage.

What amazes your humble servant is that Israel never learns its lesson. Overpowered by a feeling that we must be first and foremost “humanitarian”, we needlessly expose ourselves to murderous terrorism.
