Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours

Numerous terror attacks occurred on Monday.

Border policemen were targeted by assault weapon fire at a checkpoint outside of Ramallah, “rocks” and Molotovs were thrown at a bus near Beit Ummar, a policeman was wounded in Issawiya, an IDF patrol was attacked with an IED at Koubek, Palestinian mobs rioted outside of Tekoa, Budrus, Silwan, A-Tur, and Al Khader.

The disastrous situation on Israeli roads

7 more Israelis died in traffic accidents yesterday bringing the year’s total to 312. This already exceeds the total number killed last year (301) making it likely that this will be one of the worst if not the most lethal years of traffic accident deaths in Israeli history.

Of the 312 number, 96 were Israeli Arabs.

And these numbers are happening despite improved infrastructure and driver education.

So why are the deaths mounting?

It’s easy. Israelis drive like maniacs.

Two great pieces of train news

Because of the carnage on the roads, an increasing number of Israelis are turning to trains to transport them where they want to go. And yesterday, there was excellent news on two fronts.

First, Transportation Israel Katz announced today that he will push for an additional stop to be added to the express train that will begin operating from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem next year.

Specifically 22 km will be added in a series of tunnels and bridges which will culminate in “the Wall Stop”. In other words, passengers will be able to take the train directly to the Kotel.

For anyone who is familiar with Jerusalem and knows the difficulty of getting from the Central Bus Station and the new Central Train station to the Old City, this will be a wonderful improvement.

Second, it was also announced that bids will soon be accepted to begin the rail line from Beersheva to Eilat. Again, this is long overdue. It is projected that with the completion, travel time from Tel Aviv to Eilat will be 2 hours and 25 minutes by train.

Another Palestinian Policeman Tries to Murder Israelis

Yesterday’s shooting attack referenced above was the latest in a long line of Palestinian “policeman” attacks on Israelis.*

This time the terrorist was a 25 year old policeman/”security guard” from Jenin working in Ramallah who finished his job for the day, walked from the Palestinian Legislative Council Building to the Focus Checkpoint with a Kalashnikov assault rifle in his hand, and opened fire on a group of three IDF soldiers from the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers’ Brigade.

Three soldiers were wounded before fellow soldiers managed to kill the terrorist.

Your humble servant could not help but think about this when considering the news yesterday that Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Public Security Minister, has embarked on a massive campaign to add thousands of Israeli Arabs to the Israel Police.

While it is true that some Israeli Arabs are loyal to the country (one thinks especially of part of the Druze population in northern Israel), there are numerous Israeli-Arab towns and cities which are most decidedly not, such as Umm al-Fahm and Sakhnin. And while it is also true that these Israeli-Arab communities have become more crime ridden in recent years and need more police, there is no guarantee that the policemen will only be stationed in Israeli-Arab areas.

The bottom line is: the more Palestinian policeman there are and the more Israeli-Arab policeman there are, the more vulnerable Israelis will be to attacks like the one that took place yesterday.

*A few of such incidents over the years:

On February 15 this year, a Palestinian policeman opened fire on Border Police officers at the Damascus Gate before being shot and killed.

On April 24, 2011 Ben Yosef Livnat, a 24-year-old who was worshiping at Joseph’s Tomb in Shechem was shot dead by a Palestinian policeman.

On January 29 2004, eleven Israelis were killed and more than 50 were wounded when a Palestinian policeman from Bethlehem blew himself up on Egged Bus 19 in Jerusalem.
