The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

Remember how PM Netanyahu claimed at Sunday’s security cabinet meeting that Israel had demanded that incendiary kites and balloons must stop being launched into Israel?

Dozens of more launches occurred again yesterday–and at least 9 more big fires were lit including ones at Neot, Nahal Oz (2), Alumim, Nir Am, Be’eri, Kissufim, Mekorot, and Netiv HaAsara.

One incendiary device landed in the yard of a kindergarten at Sdot Negev while the children were playing in the yard. An alert teacher spotted the device, got the children to safety, and called police sappers to defuse the “balloon.”

A video posted last night by the launchers said that the “kites and balloons” would continue until all of “Palestine” is liberated.

Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem:

–The fire plague continues to spread to Judea and Samaria with dozens of olives trees burned by Palestinian terrorists near Yitzhar yesterday.

The Yitzhar fire yesterday. Dozens of olive trees were burned--and homes in the community were threatened.

–Palestinian terrorists threw “rocks” and Molotovs at Israelis at the Migdalim Junction, Tekoa, Hawara, on Road 443, at numerous sites in Gush Etzion, and a myriad of other places.

The farce at the Kerem Shalom Crossing . . .

Remember how the Kerem Shalom Crossing was supposed to be closed yesterday in conjunction with the Egyptian closing of the Rafah Crossing?

Well it turns out that 143 trucks loaded with various supplies actually passed into Gaza.

Our idiotic IDF COGAT unit was proud to point out that some trucks got through, but bemoaned that it was the lowest number of trucks to go through Kerem Shalom on any day in the last 4 years.

Obviously Israel and Egypt have a different set of mathematics.

In Israel:  0 = 143

In Egypt:  0 = 0

A very important new law sneaks in under the radar . . .

The Knesset approved a powerful new law last night. Before now, Israel’s High Court of “Injustice” was the first and last Court for administrative decisions in Judea and Samaria for Palestinians and their leftist supporters.

This meant that any Palestinian, or Palestinians, or leftist organization representing Palestinians could go straight to the Court to have their case heard, unlike Israeli community members who had to petition the district administrative affairs court in Jerusalem.

No more.

Starting today, everyone–Palestinians and Israelis alike–will have to present their petitions to the district court. The judicial system will no longer be biased in favor of the Palestinians.

The main person behind the enactment of the law was Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked who said yesterday: “From now on they [the Palestinians and their supporters] will have to go through the legal hurdle as every Israeli citizen passes.”

But perhaps much more important is the fact that the law is one more step toward the annexation of Area C.

As Shaked said: “[By passing this law], the Knesset conveyed an important message – the residents of Judea and Samaria are an inseparable part of Israel’s citizens. They serve in the army and the reserves and fulfill their full obligations to the state . . . Hebron, Ra’anana, Elon Moreh and Kiryat Shemona are inseparable parts of the Land of Israel.”

WOW is wow no longer . . .

Bye bye WOW.

Bye bye WOW.

The low-cost Icelandic airline WOW just announced that it was suspending flights to Israel effective immediately. The airline said the decision was based on economics–simply not enough people were flying on the route from Reykjavik to Eilat.

This was obviously true. Only 900 tourists arrived from Iceland on WOW during the first six months of this year.

However, the WOW decision also pointed to another disturbing reality. As you may or may not know, the Israel Ministry of Tourism actually pays airlines to open routes to Israel.

In the case of WOW, we paid the airline 750,000 Euros. The money was supposed to be used to market Israel to Icelanders, but in reality who knows where the money went?

By the way, Sichuan Air, China’s second largest airline, agreed yesterday to open a new route from China to Israel in a few months. At this point, it is unclear how much it was paid to do so.

TODAY’S BLOG:

What Has Gone Wrong With The IDF?

“We heard a lot of talk yesterday, today, the day before yesterday, about the security policy of the Israeli government, so first of all we should clarify that security policy should not be a response to political or media pressure. What we need today is coolness and nerves from iron, not a stopwatch in hand and media hysteria. We are doing what needs to be done and the IDF is prepared for every scenario.”

Avigdor Lieberman, so-called “Defense” Minister of Israel, talking about the criticism leveled against him and IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot by Naftali Bennett at the last so-called “Security” Cabinet meeting.

This statement is absurd on so many levels that one hardly knows where to start.

To begin with, Israel has no security policy when it comes to the Israeli communities along the Gaza border. All the government and IDF do is react to whatever the terrorists in Gaza do–and react poorly at that.

Coolness and nerves of iron? Of course those qualities are what any government and army need, but our leaders most assuredly don’t possess them. Lieberman is nowhere to be seen except on television occasionally making bellicose statements about what the IDF is going to do “if there is just one more violation.” He is nothing but a tired joke.

Furthermore, the IDF is also “most assuredly” not doing what needs to be done and is not prepared for every scenario. Just ask yourself:

was the IDF prepared for the onslaught of incendiary kites and balloons?  Obviously not.

was the IDF prepared for the 200 missiles and mortars that hit southern Israel on Saturday? Obviously not.

Israel burns, and Israelis huddle in bomb shelters, and all the IDF Chief of Staff can do is say that he believes it is immoral to attack those who are attacking us.

Consider these four actions taken yesterday:

unnamed IDF officials pleaded with the government to “apply civilian pressure” so that no military action will have to be taken against Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

it was revealed on Israel’s Channel 20 last night that the reason that no terrorists are ever killed in Gaza is because the IDF informs Hamas and Islamic Jihad in advance about where we are going to strike.

remember the 72 hour window that the IDF wanted to give Hamas and Islamic Jihad to stop the missiles, kites, and balloons? Now, the IDF wants to give the terrorists until Friday.

an IDF spokesman last night said that the IDF is “not prepared” for “a major operation” against Gaza but is “expecting” more “short rounds” like the 200 missiles and mortars that hit on Saturday.

Can you believe any of this? What has gone wrong with the IDF?

Another small piece of news from yesterday answers the question.

Ali Abu Awad is a convicted Palestinian Fatah terrorist who was sentenced to 10 years in an Israeli prison for various terrorist offenses back in the 1980s.

When the Oslo “Peace Accords’ were signed, Awad was released–after only serving four years. Awad returned to Palestinian society (such as it is), and to Fatah. In his spare time, he now runs the Bereaved Families’ Forum for Peace–a despicable organization that equates the families of dead terrorists with the families of Israelis murdered by Palestinian terrorists.

Guess what else Awad is now doing in his spare time?

Being paid to give lectures to IDF commanders including one this past week to the IDF commanders of the Etzion Central Brigade. The subject of his lecture was “The IDF is an Occupation Army.”

One of the IDF commanders present, who was aghast at what he heard, said this:

“My army, ours, regards itself as an occupier and tries to convince us that we are occupiers and therefore there is no enemy – there is only an enemy. [The Palestinians are] “poor protesters”, and we are really to blame for everything. What the IDF commanders are taught is that IDF soldiers are policemen, while the enemy is only civilians.”

What is wrong with the IDF is the self-destructive, politically correct culture which has infected it–all the way up the chain of command to the IDF Chief of Staff.
