The News on the Israeli Street!

Palestinian terror continues unabated . . .

Zimma (the windows on a bus shattered), the Gush Etzion Road near Hevron (an Israeli family in their car assaulted), Al Aruv ( “rock” and Molotov attacks on Israeli drivers), the Casbah in Hevron (a Jewish woman pelted with “rocks”), Adam (another road assault with “rocks” and Molotovs), the Abu Ziad neighborhood in Hevron (Border Police attacked), the Kerem Shalom Crossing (a fire started by an incendiary balloon from Gaza), Curve 160 near the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hevron (IDF soldiers attacked), the Postal Junction near Ras Karkar (Israeli wounded by “rocks”), and on and on: these were a few of the terror attacks carried out by Palestinian terrorists yesterday.

Reconciliation talks between the PLO and Hamas fall apart . . .

As we predicted.

Despite the best efforts of Egypt to bring the two terrorist organizations together, talks between them have completely broken down. Two days ago, Hamas arrested a number of Fatah (PLO) members in Gaza; yesterday the PLO retaliated by withholding $10 million in international aid designated for Gazan diesel fuel, sewage treatment, and hospitals.

The result?

Both sides attacked Israel.

Hamas ordered its balloon and kite brigades to resume firing at southern Israel (as if it ever stopped), and ordered its foot terrorists out to the border fence today for another round of confrontations with our soldiers.

The PLO ordered its minions into the streets after Friday prayers this afternoon, and called on Muslim residents of eastern Jerusalem to flock to the Temple Mount in order to protect the Al-Aksa Mosque in advance of the coming Jewish high holy days.

They can’t get along with each other so they attack us.

More information on the Lebanese wall . . .

The IDF’s northern command announced yesterday that it was about to complete the first 13 kilometers of a wall separating Lebanon from Israel.

These 13 kilometers were in two separate sections: one opposite Metulla and the other near Rosh Hanikra. Built at a cost of 1.7 billion shekels, the walls are supposed to “disrupt the future infiltration of thousands of Hezbollah elite fighters” in the event of another war.

However, as we all know by now, walls like this one can be easily overcome. All is takes is a couple of well-placed bombs to open holes in the wall and a few tunnels to burrow beneath it. And of course, the wall will not stop a single one of the some 150,000 Hezbollah missiles pointed our way.

In any case, we now have the Lebanese Wall, the Syrian Fence, the Jordanian fence, the Sinai Wall, and the Gaza fence/Wall. We are almost completely enclosed by walls and fences.

Small Friday snippets

The U.S. Embassy expands . . .

June 2019 is the target date for the U.S. to double the size of the American Embassy in Jerusalem. This according to U.S. Ambassador David Friedman as he described in a conference call with Jewish leaders yesterday.

The average monthly wage of Israeli workers increases . . .

Slightly, to 10,884 shekels ($2981) per month in June from the previous record of 10,852 shekels in March.

However, this number is not as positive as it might seem. Two thirds of all employees (66.3%) make less than the average wage.

How about some honey for Rosh Hashana? . . .

As you may not know, frankincense is derived from trees of the Boswellia genus, and there is only one place in the world where this tree is grown as an agricultural crop. This place is in the unique climate of the northern end of the Dead Sea in the midst of persimmon farms. Two months ago, farmers inserted bee hives within the persimmon/Boswellia trees, and four kilograms of honey were produced. For only $1000 per kilo, you can taste some of this extremely rare honey.

The Gospel According To Ayelet Shaked

You may have missed it last month, but Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked of the Jewish Home Party (Beit Yehudi) was named the most influential person in Israel by the daily business newspaper The Marker.

The choice of Shaked was based on her overwhelming political success promoting conservative legislation, her dramatic impact on the Israel Supreme Court, and her even more dramatic impact on the rest of the Israeli judiciary. In this latter regard, she has now appointed approximately one third of all Israeli judges (around 300)–all of which share her conservative ideology which emphasizes non-intervention in the legislative and executive branches of government.

Public surveys show that Shaked is now the most popular politician in the country.

In a powerful interview yesterday with the left-wing newspaper Yedioth Aharanot, Shaked–who has said she has no interest in becoming Prime Minister, yet)–discussed her accomplishments and offered a number of political observations. According to Shaked:

*“The High Court of Justice is no longer a branch of Meretz (the ultra left-wing Israeli political party) . . . it is more diverse, more conservative. . .”

*“[In regard to other judges] I read their judgments and their opinions, and I consulted with those who know them, and the most important thing is the identity of the justices I promoted people who in their worldview are more conservative. Democracy in my time has not weakened.”

*“I hope that the public will understand that if our Jewish Home Party does not receive a number of Knesset seats, Netanyahu will form a coalition with the left [after the next elections].”

*“The New Israel Fund is a body whose activities undermine the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. The organizations that benefit from the Fund’s money are active in fighting against the laws within the State of Israel and are acting against Israel abroad.”

Ayelet Shaked may not be running for Prime Minister in 2019, but when her time comes, she will have your humble servant’s vote. What she has accomplished in her term as Justice Minister is remarkable, and her political acumen is spot on.
