The News On The Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Along the Gaza border:

*We awakened in Ashdod this morning to a thick pall of smoke hanging over the area from the two types of fires which are constantly burning along the Gaza border.

First, fires from burning tires at Zikim:

A picture from Zikim yesterday: Palestinian terrorists set fire to tires.

A picture of Palestinian terrorists at Zikim yesterday:  More than 1200 Hamasniks burned tires, threw IEDs, and hurled grenades at our soldiers. Tires are constantly burning at different places along the border.

Second, from fires set by incendiary balloons flown into Israel:

A fire set by a balloon yesterday near Nir Am burns hundreds of more dunams.

*Another incendiary balloon actually landed on top of a school in Ashkelon but was defused before it could do damage.

*Elsewhere further south along the fence near the Egyptian border, infiltrators armed with guns and knives were repulsed by IDF troops.

*Another false alarm that wasn’t false was found in Nir Am yesterday afternoon when a resident found an unexploded Qassam rocket in his backyard. This rocket was apparently fired on the same night as the missiles hit Be’ersheva and Bat Yam, but the IDF reported that an alarm in the Nir Am area was a false alarm.

As we have often written on israelstreet, there is no such thing as a false alarm.

In Judea and Samaria:

*The Palestinian terrorist pictured above rushed toward an IDF soldier guarding the Avraham Avinu neighborhood yesterday, stabbed him, and was then shot to death by the other soldiers. Fortunately, the soldier’s wound was “moderate.”

*Another stabbing was thwarted at Samaria Brigade Square when alert IDF officers subdued a Palestinian terrorist.

*Palestinian terrorists attacked buses with “rocks” and Molotovs at Michmash and the Yakir Junction.

*Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli motorists with “rocks” and Molotovs at such places as just outside of Karmei Tzur, at Luban a-Sharqiya, Beit Ummar, Husan, El Aruv, Road 443 near the Dor Alon gas station, and Tekoa.

An indictment was filed yesterday . . .

The terrorist who murdered Ari Fuld was in court yesterday where he was indicted for “intentional manslaughter” and other offenses.

Your humble servant is no legal expert, but I wonder why the terrorist was not charged with murder. Israeli news is reporting that a charge of intentional manslaughter in Israel is equivalent to a charge of murder, but why not simply charge him with murder–terrorist murder at that.

Meanwhile, Ari Fuld’s widow has written a letter to military authorities questioning why the terrorist’s home has not been destroyed.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Iran Consolidates Its Position in Southern Syria

Various reports in the last month indicate that Iran and its proxy Hezbollah are consolidating their position in southern Syria–even to the point of establishing militia bases and taking over the border positions between Syria and Jordan (see map below):

So far, hundreds of Hezbollah fighters in the guise of Lebanese civilians have taken over the crossings near Zaizoun and Tal Shihab.

The takeover has not gone without incident. Two Hezbollah field commanders were killed by Syrian rebels yesterday, but Iran is more than willing for Hezbollah to suffer losses so that it (Iran) can enact its strategy of Syrian dominance.

In fact, the Iranians and their militias now control southern Syria and the crossings into Syria and eastern Syria and the crossings into Iraq. What they do not control are northern Syria and its crossings into Turkey and western Syria with its crossing into Israel at Quneitra.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the Iranians do not control these two areas–yet. None of the powers that are present in Syria possess the power or the will to stop them.
