Will The New Gaza Border Fence Stop Terrorists?

Hanegbi Puts His Foot In His Mouth Again:

The Idiotic Quote of the Day

“Demonstrations on the fence in Gaza do not disturb the communities surrounding the fence.”

Tzahi Hanegbi, member of the Netanyahu security cabinet and Netanyahu confidant speaking yesterdayon a day when Palestinian terrorists burned dozens of more tires along the border thereby contaminating the air for miles around.

Your humble servant is sure that you remember that this is the same Hanegbi who commented after the recent conflict with Hamas that the lives of those in Tel Aviv were more valuable than those of us in the South.

If you said Netanya or Tel Aviv or Ashdod, you could be excused for making a mistake. However, this picture is of the Gaza shoreline on Saturday morning.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

On the Gaza border:

Numerous attacks on our soldiers along the border, and numerous attempts to break through the border barrier: the most egregious occurred when a Hamas terror cell attempted to breach the border fence east of El Bureij, but was repulsed by IDF fire.

In Judea and Samaria:

In Hevron, Border Police thwarted a stabbing at the Cave of the Patriarchs. A Palestinian terrorist attempted to enter the building in a group of tourists but was spotted by the Police who disarmed him.

“Rock” and Molotov attacks took place in every direction; one of the worst was on Road 505 between Beit Dajan and Elon Moreh.

The ultra-left wing Balad party shows its colors . . .

A couple of nights ago at the meeting of the Israeli-Arab Balad Party to set the election list for the April election, Balad played and all stood for the Palestinian national anthem.

In response to criticism of this, Dr. Matanes Shehadeh, party leader, commented this morning: “We are part of the Palestinian people. The Israeli flag and anthem do not reflect us; on the contrary, they are part of our oppression.”

Speaking of the election . . .

As you may or may not be aware, there is a “New Likud” movement attempting to destroy Netanyahu’s Likud party from within.

Your humble servant has talked to a number of these new Likudniks.

They uniformly despise Likud and despise Netanyahu. What an estimated 7,000 of them have done is:

1. register as members of the Likud party

2. put forward a list of anti-Likud party “members” for the Likud election primary

Next they intend to vote for these members.

Once the primary is finished, they intend to resign from Likud and vote for other parties on the “Left.”

Because everyone is aware of this strategy, there has been an ongoing attempt inside Likud in recent weeks to thwart the New Likudniks. What will happen in the primary completely depends on the turnout of regular Likud party members.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Will The New Gaza Border Fence Stop Terrorists?

The first section of the above ground fence went up on Thursday.

The first section of the above ground fence went up on Thursday. Will a fence that looks like this be capable of stopping Palestinian terrorists from Gaza?

“On Thursday, we began working on the final component of the barrier project along the Gaza border. The barrier is unique and especially suited to threats from the Gaza Strip and will provide a maximum response to prevent entry into Israeli territory.”

Brig. Gen. Eran Ophir, head of IDF fence-building project

It is often thought (outside of Israel) that there is a border wall between Israel and Gaza. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In a very few places such as beside Netiv Ha’Asara there is a large concrete wall, but in most other places there is nothing but a flimsy fence ranging in height from 2 to 3 meters. This fence is easily penetrable and would be flashpoint of mass terror infiltrations were IDF soldiers not stationed along the border.

As we all know,  Israel has been working on below-ground obstacles to stop Hamas tunnels for the last three years. That work has nearly reached its conclusion, and so attention is now turning to above ground fencing.

This new fence will begin at the maritime barrier at Zikim and continue south to the Kerem Shalom Crossing. It will be 65 km long (40 miles) and 6 meters high.

Israel is hoping that it will have the same sort of success as the similar fence along the Sinai border with Egypt which has completely stopped infiltrations in that area.

However, it must be pointed out that infiltrators coming from Africa do not possess the bombs, grenades, IEDs, and other explosives that Palestinians in Gaza regularly use when blowing holes in the current fence.

More than this, one wonders when this fence will be completed. As you may remember, work on the below-ground “fence” has been halted numerous times by Hamas snipers. Above-ground workers will be even more vulnerable to sniper attacks.

In sum, just a casual look at the new fence does not engender confidence that it will be able to stop terrorist incursions. It might slow them down for a few minutes, but it is hard to believe that it will stop them.
