TODAY’S BLOG:

Observations on the Falash Mura Arriving In Israel Tonight

Falashmura in Gondar, Ethiopia.

Falash Mura in Gondar, Ethiopia.

As you may not know dear reader, there has been an ongoing controversy in Israel about the fate of parents and other relatives of Jewish-Ethiopian immigrants to Israel.

For years, about one thousand of these relatives have been stuck in Gondar and Addis Ababa because they are not Jewish–having converted to other religions in past centuries. At present, they have not undergone the requisite orthodox conversion back to Judaism to pass muster in Israel.

Now, however, after a concerted effort by Israeli-Ethiopians which produced a government decision last year to allow 1000 of those still in Ethiopia to immigrate to Israel, 82 parents will be reunited with their children and other relatives in Israel tonight.

On the face of things, family reunification always seems like a good idea; however, one need not look too far (think immigrants from the former Soviet Union*) to see instances in Israel in which those entering the country as “non-Jewish relatives” had major difficulties assimilating into Israeli society.

The problem is that at some point they stopped trying to assimilate and developed non-Jewish enclaves, non-Jewish enclaves complete with non-kosher supermarkets, Christmas trees, and other elements which undermine the Jewish character of Israel.

It is with all the above in mind that we here on israelstreet welcome those arriving from Ethiopia tonight, but at the same time sincerely hope that they will follow their relatives and become Jewish citizens of the country.

*Addendum: This is not even to mention the completely different disastrous circumstance of Israeli-Arabs being “reunited” with family members in Gaza under the Family Reunification Law.
